SALE OF PURE BRED SHEEP AND CATTLE.
A sale of pure bred sheep and cattle, took place on Saturday last on the grounds of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. It was intended that the sale should commence at eleven o’clock, but it was long after that hour before a beginning was made, and the result was that night was closing in and the majority of buyers had left the grounds before he cattle were submitted. There was not a very large attendance throughout the day, and the biddings could only be called animated at intervals. Mr Matthew Miller of Hawke’s Bay was the largest purchaser, and though it may be said that the cream of the sheep sold will go to the North, still some very excellent lots were purchased by Canterbury flockowners. In the cattle class, the lately imported pure bred short-horn bull, Charming Prince, was knocked down to Mr David Gebbie for 260 gs, amid the cheers of those present. For Royal Prince, a pure bred short-horn roan bull, (whose sire was sold in England for 1650g5), the highest bid offered was that of the Rev W. J, G. Bluett (460 gs), but he was passed in at 600 gs, the hid of the importer, Mr J. N. Gower. First Lord, a roan bull by Bth Duke of Geneva, fell to Mr J. Heslop’s bid of 400 gs, and goes to Napier.
