ROAD BOARDS.

RICCAKTON.

The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Saturday at the office, Cashel street west. Present—Messrs H. J. Hall (chairman), Nunweek, Patterson, and Inwood. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman stated that, in accordance •with the resolution passed at the last meeting, fresh tenders had been invited for clearing the Waiararapa stream, and that he had selected that of Cartwright and Chick, subject to the approval of the Government. A letter was received from the Secretary for Public Works approving of the above tender, and stating that on the Government being advised that a contract has been duly entered into with the said pnrties for clearing the Waiararapa, the sum of £32 will be placed to the credit of the Board. A letter was received from Mr J. P. O'Callaghan guaranteeing the sum of £22, being the contribution promised towards clearing the Waiararapa. The specifications and contract duly signed for the above work were laid on the table, and the surveyor stated that the work was progressing satisfactorily. Tenders were received for metalling portions of the Waiararapa road, and the Kaiapoi and Prebbleton junction road, when that of A. M. Philpott was accepted for the former, and J. Foster and Brothers for the latter. A letter was received from Colonel Packe calling attention to the loose stones on the Eiccarton road. The surveyor stated that the stones were now being removed, but that it was impossible to keep the road quite clear during dry weather, as every mob of sheep which travelled the road turned up large quantities. A letter was received from the Secretary for Public Works (in reply) stating that the Government is in treaty with the owner of section 199, for the acquisition of a chain wide road through the said section where no road has yet been dedicated, the same being known as the Fendaltown road, with an extended width of fifty links on the north side. A letter was received from the Templeton Eoad Board, enclosing cheque for £27 10s 6d, being one-half cost of |maintaining the boundary roads. The surveyor was directed to report at next meeting on where it is necessary to erect guide posts, and cost of same. A report by Mr Pavitt, civil engineer, ordered by the Board at last meetiug, was read, on the comparative value of reserve 93A, and the land proposed to be given in exchange therefore, the chairman stated that he had ordered the clerk to forward a copy of the report to his Honor the Superintendent. It was decided to defer the consideration of the report until after a reply. it was resolved that the Chairman and Messrs Inwood and Patterson wait on the Government and endeavour to settle the Beserve question, as the Board is being put to considerable incouvenience in consequence of not being able to specify where gravel is to be procured. Mr Inwood and the surveyor were requested to examine the state of the drainage of the Papanui swamp between sections 492

and 002, and to carry out the work in terms of the surveyor's report if considered the most practicable. The surveyor's report was Tead and approved, and, after passing accounts for woik done, the Board adjourned uutil Saturday, the sth of December. MANJDEVILLE AND RANGIORA. The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held on Friday at the usual hour. All the members were present, Mr H. Blacketfc occupying the chair. Tenders were opened for the Beach road embankment, worVs. Also, for shingling a portion of the Main North road, a po-tion of the Rangiora and Woodend Road and two sections of the Drain road, and the lowest in each case accepted. With regard to the sandhill on the North road, several suggestions for preventing the sand from encroaching on the road were made, and ultimately it was resolved that some of the members of the Board should visit the spot on Monday, the 9th instant, with a view to having a permanent check put on it. Messrs T. Bird and A. Protheroe attended and asked for a bridge to be placed across the Southbrook on a road leading to the Kaiapoi and Ashley road. They were informed that the Board had no funds at their disposal for this purpose. Mr T. Bird was granted permission to cut the flax on the above road, on condition that he cleared the road thoroughly of all rubbish. Mr Luke Cox attended and asked the Board to fence off the road recently purchased from the Natives, to connect the reserve with Revell's road. The Board declined to grant the request. The surveyor's report was read and considered, and in accordance therewith, he was instructed to prepare estimates for widening the Rangiora and Woodend road before next meeting of the Board. Also, to call tenders for re-forming Revell's road, and levelling that portion that is at present unformed. The question of cleaning out the drains leading from that road to the Cam, was deferred till next meeting, Mr Bramley undertaking to ascertain what amount the residents immediately benefitted, would contribute towards the work. The surveyor was authorised to expend a small sum on a road leading from the Woodend Beach, also, to form a portion of the Coldstream road near the Cam mill, and to put pipes across the gully in lieu of the bridge at present standing. A letter was read from Mr G. Wallace, asking permission to put pipes across the Drain road, to conduct water to his section. Leave granted, subject to the approval of the surveyor. A letter from Messrs Hanmer and Harper was read, asking for a map of the district, to which the clerk was directed to reply, stating that the Board do not possess a spare one. The clerk was also directed to acknowledge receipt of a letter from Mr M. Hart. Several matters referred to in the surveyor's report were deferred for consideration, and the Board decided to hold a special meeting on the 20th instant. The clerk was directed to procure estimates of the cost of renovating his dwellinghouse, by repiling, &c. The monthly pay-sheet and other accounts amounting to £2 8 17s Bd, were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned till Friday the 20th instant:
