SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

EAST CHRISTCHURCH

A meeting of the East Ohristohurch school committee was held on Thursday, November sth, at 4 p.m. All the members were present. On the motion of Mr Thomas, 'seconded by the Rev H. C. M. Watson, Mr W. H. Wynn Williams was re-elected chairman. It was resolved that the committee meet on Thursday, at 7 p.m. A letter was read from the Board of Education, sanctioning certain works required at the South town belt and Bingsland schools ; also, one sanctioning Mr Hammond's plans for the furniture for the South town belt school. Tenders were also opened for the supply of the said furniture. It was resolved to accept Mr Hinds' (the lowest) provided Mr Farr„ the architect, could recommend it, and subject to the approval of the Board of Education. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary, stating that hi 3 Honor the Superintendent had been pleased to exempt the persons recommended by the committee from payment of the household rate, and that the list had been forwarded to the collector. A letter was read from Mrs Haughton, stating that she was in great want of more teaching power, owing to the considerable increase in the attendance at St John's School. Moved by the Hev W. J. Habens, seconded by Mr Mitchell—" That Mrs J. Woodford be appointed assistant mistmss at St John's School while the committee remain in occu-

pation thereof, .it a salary of £(SO peranLum, subject to the sanction of the Board of Education."

An amendment was moved by the Kev H. C. M. Watson, seconded by Mr Packer—- " That the committee advertise for an assistant mistress."

The amendment was negatived (ayes 3, noes 5). The original motion on being put was carried (ayes 5, noes 3).

(Mr Wynn Williams then asked for leave of absence, and Mr Thomas took the chair.) A letter was read from Mr Bonningtou, as agent for the Music Hall Company, stating that he was unable to get the hall cleaned for the sum paid by the committee. It was resolved to offer 10s a week, the committee deeming such a sum ample in view of the high rent they were paying. An amended offer from Mr Wilkin of a piece of land, about an acre and a quarter, adjoining the South Town Belt School site was submitted.

It was resolved to recommend the Board of Education to purchase the same, the present site being very narrow. A letter was read from Mrs Anderson, enclosing a subscription towards opening entertainment at the South town belt school, and stating that she would be unable to take any active part iu the arrangements. Ordered to be acknowledged with thanks. The following sub-committees were appointed to visit the respective schools in the district, to make any recommendation, and report generally at the next meeting of the committee : For the Music Hall school—Rev ;H. C. M. Watson and Mr Kirk. For St John's school —Rev W. J. Habens and Mr Packer. For the South town belt school—Messrs Dymock and Mitchell. For the Bingsland school—Messrs Thomas and Jameson. On the question of a holiday in honor of the Prince of Wales's birthday, it was resolved that the schools be closed for Thursday, the 12th instant, being the Agricultural Show day. The temporary arrangements made by Miss Anthony, for the cleaning of the South town belt school, were sanctioned. After passing several accounts, the meeting adjourned. KAIAPOI. The usual meeting of the borough school committee was held on Friday evening. Present —All the members, except Messrs Macfarlanc and Beswick. Accounts amounting to £42 3s 6d were passed for payment. It was resolved that the scholars receive holiday on Thursday and Friday next. A letter was read from Mrs G. Weston in reference to certain Scripture questions given to one of her children to answer by Mr Matthews, also enclosing reply from Mr Matthew?, which stated the questions were from a book compiled by Dr Watts, which was fit to be laid on the table of any nursery. It was decided to refer the letter to Mr Matthews for information as to the authority upon which the book was used. A letter from the Board of Education was received sanctioning the expenditure of £6 for lightning conductor, aDd £l2 for secretary's salary. Mr G. F. Hewlings was unanimously appointed secreta-y. The Chairman was requested to telegraph asking the Board of Education what steps had been taken in reference to the recommendations of the committee respecting the appointment of the teaching staff. The committee then adjourned. PAPANUI. A meeting of the committee was held on Friday last, November 6th. Present: all the members except Mr Freestone. The Chairman reported that he had received seven applications for the post of head-mastership of the district school, in answer to the advertisement inserted in Press and Lyttelton Times newspapers. The committee, after considering the applications, and the testimonials accompanying them, appointed Mr Edward Morgan, at present master of the Templeton school, head-master of the Papanui district school, in the place of Mr Mayo, resigned, subject to the approval of the Board of Education ; his engagement to commence with the ensuing quarter. On the motion of Mr Barlow, seconded by Mr Smith, the chairman was instructed to write to the Board of Education and to inform them of the large increase in the attendance of scholars, there being 180 on the books, and to request the appointment of an assistant teacher to the school. The contractors for levelling the school grounds were ordered to be paid the amount due to them under their contract. Mr Smith, on behalf of the sub-committee, reported that the various works which the sub-committee were instructed to superintend were being carried out, viz.: the reerection of the eastern chimney, the removal of nightsoil, and the alteration of the gymnastic apparatus and swing.
