ROAD BOARDS.

AY ON. The usual meeting of this Board took place on October 21st, There were present—Messrs Peacock, Duncan, Dickinson, and Norman. Mr Peacock was voted to the chair. The clerk reported the receipt of the following sums since last meeting:—From general rates, £B2 6s ; Waimakariri do, £7 19s 7d ; forfeited deposit, £2 ; total, £92 5s 7d. The balance to the Board’s credit is £•443 Is Bd. A letter from Mr Hewitt was read, informing the Board that the road had been dedicated as wished. The clerk was directed to lay before the Board the resolutions passed in reference to this road. With regard to Mr Chalmers’ complaint of a drain taking the use of part of his land from him, a letter, in reference to the said drain, from Mr Bing, dated March 4th, was read, when it was decided to inform Mr Chalmers that the Board had a right to the use of the drain. The clerk was also directed to ask Mr Bing to give a written promise as to the drain being used in accordance with the terms of his letter of the above date. With regard to clearing Horner’s drain, it was decided that all correspondence and minutes relating to the said drain be laid on the table next meeting. The chairman (pro tern.') informed the Board that the chairman had accepted a tender for re forming and shingling a portion of the North road, as requested. Tenders for additions and alterations Jto the Hoad Board office were opened, and one was accepted. Mr Salter saw the Board in reference to forming a road by Shirley Chapel. He was informed that the Board had decided to take over no roads unless dedicated, and that the usual subscription towards its formation would be required, Mr Balter said that those interested were willing to contribute towards the cost of the work, and would get the road properly dedicated. Mr Luke saw the Board in reference to the action taken by it in cutting a drain through j his private property, claiming compensation, but the matter was deferred as the chairman was absent. Mr Brittan saw the Board, complaining of a nuisance caused by a neighbor having stopped the drainage. The chairman- said that he thought the matter was one for the police, but that the surveyor would look into it. Mr Joynt asked permission to burn some gorse on the road. Granted, providing it were done early in the morning. It was resolved that Mr Pearce’s rates be remitted. Letters were read : From Mr F. Paviit, in reference to the drain running through the church section being in a foul condition. Referred to the surveyor. From Mr Toon, asking the intention of the Board with regard to filling in Mahar’s drain. The clerk to reply that the Board had nothing to do with the drain, as it was on private property. From Mr Lodge, complaining of the impasable state of the road leading to his land, and requesting the Board to form about 15 chains of it. Referred to the surveyor to report. From Mr Barker, offering to repair, and keep in repair, the New Brighton road from Dudley creek to the sea for six months for £lO. Accepted. From Mr Walkden, in reference to the contracts of Mr Sycamore and Mr Waite. The clerk was directed to inform Mr Waite that the Board having considered Mr Walkden’s remarks on his letter, decided that unless within six days he d( livered the gravel to the Board’s order, it would proceed to put the gravel, left at Papanui, where it was originally intended he should have delivered it, at his expense. With relation to Sycamore’s account, the Board decided that it could not recognise the claim unless he procured a certificate from Mr Walkden, that the shingle had been delivered. A letter from Mr J. Rountree was read, asking the Board to put a bridge over the drain in front of his land. The application was refused. The surveyor reported that the Office road was being made narrower than what it ought to be. The clerk was directed to inspect the dedication deed and report the result to the chairman, to act as he might think fit. The surveyor’s report was read. With regard to the culvert under St. Albans road, The surveyor was directed to prepare estimates for brick culverts, one to be put in opposite the old Wesleyan schoolroom, the o'her near Mr Peacock’s. Also, to put cither pipes or a wooden culvert at the junction of Duncan’s with the North road. To prepare an estimate of the costs of a new line of road beyond Chaney’s, where the river had encroached on the present one, and also to see that the present river fence was kept in a safe condition. With regard to Dow’s application for a bridge, The surveyor reported that it was not required, and (he Board declined to erect one. Accounts were passed and ordered to be paid to the amount of £217 11s Id, and the Board adjourned.
