(Per Anglo-Australian Press Telegraph Agency.') Auckland, October 28. The Star states that it is the intention of Sir George Grey to publish another paper on the constitutional position of the colony. He recommends a closer union with the home country, and proposes that a Secretary of State for each colony shall reside in London, and be placed in direct communication with the Imperial Government on all matters affecting the colonies. Sir Donald McLean leaves for Napier on Saturday. Napier, October 28. A committee is being formed to arrange for a public dinner to Sir Donald McLean in about a week’s time. Wellington, Oct. 28. Since the auction sale of provincial land, there has been a steady flow of applications for unsold sections, and as in many cases several applications have been made for the sections, the Government had to hold an auction sale to-day and give the highest bidder a chance. 'I he result was that the majority of sections were parted with at considerably beyond the upset price. The Douglas immigrants’ health is reestablished. One hundred are for the Fielding block, and another hundred will probably be sent to Westland, at the request of the Superintendent, by the first opportunity. Dunedin, Oct. 28. Bight city ministers decline, except in cases of emergency, to officiate on Sunday. Blenheim, Oct. 28.

Charles William Langston was committed for trial yesterday, on a charge of obtaining an acceptance of £95 by false pretence. He sold three months ago an entire horse, Lincolnshire Traveller, which he said was on its way from Christchurch. The horse never was there, and not known to have existed at all. The prosecutor is Mr John Shephard, of Grovetown.

TIMARU AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL SHOW.

Wc are indebted to a correspondent of the Press for the following telegram ; The Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s Show to-day was a great success. Nearly two thousand persons were present. The weather was splendid, calm, and warm, and not a single hitch occurred The display of horses was magnificent, more than a hundred appearing, including all de-

scriptions, the draught being the best. The sheep were also very good, though not in first-class condition, owing to the severe spring. The same drawback affected the cattle, of which the display was rather weak in numbers, though the quality was excellent, The £SO cup in Merinos went to the Canterbury and Otago Association, the cham pion ram, which brought the association a gold medal, being one lambed in September, 1873. The cup was won with 44 points, as against Mr Elworthy with 28. The £2O cup in Lcicestcrs was also won by the association with 31 points against Mr Tancred with 24, the champion ram in that class bringing a gold medal to Mr W. Marcroft. In horses Mr E. Menlove won the £2O cup with 12 points, the second highest scorer being Davie with ten points. Mr Menlove also won the gold medal for the best draught mare. Mr T. Teschemaker won the gold medal in thoroughbreds with his black horse Talisman, and Mr Cramond the ten guinea cup for the best entire, Marquis of Lome. Mr Oramond’s ten guinea cup, for Marquis of Lome’s produce, was won by Messrs Caine Brothers, of Sherwood Downs. Mr Studholme’s ten guinea prize, for weight carrying hack mares in foal, was won by Mr H. Gardener. In cattle, Mr T, S. Tancrcd won the ten guinea cup, with 27 points; the second scorer being Mr Kelland, with 11 points. In wheat, Mr Kelland won the gold medal. On the whole, the show was far superior to any previous one here, and great interest was taken in it by all classes. A large number of visitors were in attendance from Otago and all parts of Canterbury.

About two months ago the chief clerk in the Stamp Office was suspended for certain irregularities, A Board of Inquiry has made a thorough investigation, and reported to his Excellency. The result is that the officer has been fined £25. His salary has been reduced by £IOO a year ; and he has been ordered to hold himself in readiness to leave Wellington on short notice. Fifty Colonial Bank shares changed hands yesterday at 3s discount. Dunedin, October 20, The first report of the Mosgiel woollen factory, gives a nett profit for the eleven months ending October 6th, of £3611 7s sd. The following appropriation is recommended, 10 per cent dividend, £2284 15s lOd; the balance, £1326 11s 7d, to be carried to the reserve fund, for the replacement of machinery, &c. At the Supreme Court sittings, the case of Dobson v Macandrew, claim £IOOO for wrongful ejectment from the Port Chalmers railway refreshment room. The jury, at 11 p.m., returned a verdict for £2OO. The defendants obtained leave to apply for a new trial on nonsuit points, which were disallowed at the close of the plaintiff’s case. Dr Whitlow, late of the immigrant ship Schehallion, has been elected surgeon to the Naseby Hospital.
