IMPORTED STOCK.
The psstpral wealth of the province was added to yesterday by the arrival in the Wellington of some grand cattle and horses purchased in Otago, the cattle at Mr Bell’s great sale at the Taisri, and the horses in Dunedin, the Rev W. J. G. Bluett, Messrs Hay and Threlkeld being their spirited purchasers. They all arrived in good health, seemingly little the worse for their journey, if we except Mr Threlkeld’s bull being a little sorefooted, and Mr Bluett’s mares being a little chafei. Messrs Hay’s cattle were transhipped into the Halcyon without mishap, and sent at once to Pigeon Bay. Mr Bluett’s and Mr Threlkeld’s were landed and sent through by rail. There is no doubt that they are a great acquisition to the province, and will well repay inspection. We append a detailed account of the aniinals which we owe to the courtesy of the Rev W. J, G. Bluett. Mr Bluett’s purchases consist of three mares, an entire, two cows, and one calf ; Mr Threlkeld’s of a bull, and Messrs Hay's of two yearling heifers, one yearling bull, and three calves. Prince Imperial, Mr Threlkeld’s bull, is red and white, was calved December Bth, 1872, got by Prince Frederick, dam Jessamine the 24th, by Royal Butterfly the 6th, is a fine grown bull for his age, and shows a great deal of quality ; his color is hardly what we should wish, but it is only fair to say that his full brother, of exactly similar shades, sold in Sydney for £378. Mr Threlkeld got him cheap, only paying 125 guineas for him. Messrs Hay’s yearling bull is named Red Prince the 2nd, and is also red and white; calved December 13th, 1873. He was got by Prince Frederick, dam Jessamine 24th, by Hoyal Butterfly the 6th, and is therefore full brother to Prince Imperial. This yearling is a better color, and shows more quality than his elder relative—he cost only 55 guineas, and promises to make a fine bull and be a great acquisition to our Peninsula breeders. Messrs Hay’s yearling heifer, Waimea the 3rd, was calved October 18th, 1873. She is a roan and white, was got by Prince Frederick, dam Waimea, got by Royal Butterfly the 6th. She cost 90 guineas, is a pretty heifer, handling well, and showing lots of quality ; her mother, Waimea, was sold, when seven years old, for 150 guineas. Mr Bluett's cow, jessamine the 20th, is red and white, calved January oth, 1866. She was got by Royal Butterfly the6lh (imported to Australia), dam Jessamine the 6th by Lord Raglan (also imported). She is a fine cow, has plenty of substance, and yet showing lots of quality. She had a heifer calf a mouth ago, and it is the intention of her owner that she should visit Mr A. Fautham’s imported bull at once. She was bought for 70 guineas. Red Jessamine, another of Mr Bluett’s purchases, is also a red and white cow, and was calved on the Ist January, 1869, got by Royal Butterfly the 27th, dam Jessamine the 20th, by Royal Butterfly the 6th. She is the daughter of Mr Bluett’s other purchase, her time for calving was up on Saturday. She is in calf to Butterfly, by Prince Frederick out of Waimea (the same cow that sold for 150 guineas) like her mother she shews a great deal of quality and handles well, she cost 60 guineas. Messrs Hay’s heifer, Tulip, is a red and white, calved November 24th, 1873, got by King of the Butterflies, dam Red Jessamine, got by Royal Butterfly the 27th. She is a very pretty heifer, her color is good, she handles well, and shows a great deal of quality and will make a fine cow; she cost 50 guineas. Messrs Hay’s Royal Butterfly is a roan calf calved on the Ist October, 1874, got by King of the Butterflies, dam Waimea, by Royal Butterfly the 6th; he cost 55 guineas. He is so young that it is impossible to judge him, but he shows great promise. Messrs Hay’s Formosa the 4th is a roan heifer calf, calved the 14th July, 1874, got by King of the Butterflies, dam Formosa, got by Royal Butterfly the 27th. She is a pretty heifer, with a nice head and hair, and cost 70 guineas. Messrs Hays’ Bridal Flower is a white heifer, was calved August 29th, 1874. She was got by Butterfly, dam April Flower the 3rd, by Royal Butterfly the 6th. She is a very nice heifer, showing lots of breeding. She cost 75 guineas. Mr Bluett’s Wild Rose is a roan, was calved 17th September, 1874; she was got by King of the Butterflies, dam Jessamine the 20th, got by Royal Butterfly the 6tb, She is a fine
long heifer, of good color, with a pretty head, and cost Mr Bluett only 35 guineas. Mr Bell presented all purchasers of calves with foster mothers, which came down with them. Mr Bluett’s horses, as before stated, consist of an entire and three mares. The mares are all Clydesdales, two got by Lord Eglington, imported by Daniel Nesbit, Esq, into Australia; their dam, Jessie, was imported by Mr Greenwood of Mount Bolton, and they are likely to be of great service to the province for breeding purposes. Lord Eglington, their sire, was the winner of several first prizes both at home and in the colonies, and he was considered one of the best and purest bred Clydesdales ever imported from Scotland, Jessie, their dam, has frequently been shewn, but never beaten. The entire, Young Lord Eglington, was two years old on the 21st of this month, he is a fine bay with splendid bone and plenty of hair, showing great quality, and will probably furnish into an immense horse. It is to be hoped that the enterprising purchasers will be well recouped their expense and trouble.
