Mr H. E. Alport reports as follows upon the Bales at Carlton Yards, held on Wednesday last The yards were crowded with both fat and store sheep, and also fat lambs. Shorn lat half-bred wethers, very prime, brought from 21s to 27s ; do do ewes, 17s and 18s; very prime fat merino wethers, wool on, 20s to 24s ; ordinary do do, 15ai; ■good half-bred wethers, wool on, 245; store halfbred wethers, 11s 6d to 13s ; prime half-bred hoggetts, 13s 9d, 15s, and 16s ; small size young Romney Marsh ewes and lambs, 10s 6d; full size and full mouthed do do, 178 ; old merino ewes and lambs, Is 9d to 9s. Quotation of mutton, very prime, wool on, 5d ; shorn 4d per lb, A fair supply of cattle were yarded- A few vrrj prime heavy-weight cows and heifers sold at from £l2 to £ls ; ordinary do do, £9 15s to £lO IDs; do do steers, £8 10s to £9; light-weight heifers and steers, £6 15s to £8 10s; store steers and heifers, 2to 3 years old, £4 16s; do do, 18 months to 2 years old, £3 5s ; do do, 12 to 18 months, 34s to 445. Beef may be quoted as having sold for fair quality. 30s to 35s per 100 lb,• anything very prime, 37s 6d per 100 lb. The reports on the cattle market of beef at 40s are exaggerated, and have an injurious effect upon all persons engaged in the trade. Doubtless a very few exceptionally prime quality beasts have sold at 40s, but this cannot be deemed a market price. The effect of excited reports is to prevent dealers from doing business satisfactorily with graziers, and retailers on the other hand are unable to raise their prices to the fictitious values, and have lately been selling at a loss. The impression still prevails that the highest prices have been reached for fat stock.
