THE SECRETARY'S HAT.
To the Editor of the Globe. Sir, —I fully concur in the remark*made by "Moderate Provincialist" in a letter which appeared in your issue of Wodheaday last, for I have had frequent experience of the annoyance to which the public are subjected, in consequence of the forms and ceremonies which have to be gone through before the Secretary for Public Works can be approached. I quite believe that that gentleman is a splendid hand in making a little work go a long way. 1 will instance one little fact which recently came under my notice. I happened one day to be waiting, with a crowd of others, outside the sacred precincts of the the Secretary for Public Work's office, for a sight of that gentleman, when 1 witnessed what appeared to be a great commotion throughout the office. This, after a while, turned out to be caused by the great Secretary having lost his hat. Tired of waiting; any longer, 1 left in disgust, and went to> the Clarendon in search of a friend. While there, one of the officials rushed in m search of the hat. Not rinding my friend, 1 went to the "Shades." and there again 1 found an o rieial looking gentlemen inquiring after Mr Maude's hat. From there i! took a cab and proceeded to the railway
station, where, to my great surprise, I once more found one of his officials in search of the secretary's hat. On. my way home I was relating this circumstance to a friend, who told me he had just met one of the Secretary's clerks on his way to Mr Maude s residence in search of the same old hat. Now, Mr Editor, it would be a relief to my mind, as well as to that of many of your readers, if we could be informed if the Secretary has found his hat. You will scarcely credit it, Sir, but the above statement is truthful, and is only instanced by me to show how much work can be created by the Secretary for Public Works by the mere misplacing of a hat. And for all this kind of thing a grateful public has to pay. Yours, &c, OLD HAT.
