{Per Anglo-Australian Press Telegraph Agency.') Auckland, October 20. The brig Pakeha, from Oamsiru, reports encountering a fearful gale. On (Saturday, the 17th, about sixty miles east of the harrier it commenced to blow arid rain. Tin; The wind backed into the south-east, rising to a huiricane, with a tremendous sea. About, 10 a.m. that day, while the ship was hove to, a fearful sea broke aboard, smashing the fore hatch and galley, and knocking the long boatont of the chocks, carrying away a part of the bulwarks and loosening several stanchions, besides doing other damage. The ship lay on her beam e.ids six hours, and was in great danger, the sea sweeping everything away. About 1 p.m. the gale broke, and died away suddenly to a calm, leaving a high confused sea, in which the ship rolled heavily, it being impossible to keep steerage way on her. On Sunday the weather was threatening, and the ship lying very much to the lee-side. A quantity of cargo was thrown overboard to lighten her, and she righted herself. The gale then moderated. Captain Wood says if the gale had lasted a few hours longer he could not have kept the vessel afloat. The crew were completely worn out by their exertions. The Star libel case occupied all day.
