She left Hobart Town on the 10th. she has a crew of 200, and ten scientific men. She sails to-morrow for the Chatham Islands, to land the party, London, October 8. Count Arnim is kept closely confined. His release has been refused. The missing documents which caused his arrest belong to the archives of the Paris embassy. The Count denies all knowledge of the greater portion of the documents, but claims remainder as his private property. The matter causes considerable excitement in official circles in Berlin. The alleged wounding of Don Carlos is officially contradicted. There are serious dissensions in the ranks of the Carlists. Dorregarry has been dismissed, and Mendevis appointed his successor. AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, October 9. Mr James M'Culloch’s amendment on the Customs Bill was negatived by a large majority. The debate was animated. The Torres Straits mail reached Townsville five days in advance of the contract lime. Launceston, October 9. The premises of several bankrupt firms have been closed to-day. There is complete stagnation in business. INTERPROVINCIAL. Napier, October 16. There was a very large attendance at the cattle show yesterday, bnt the number of “xhibits was not so large as anticipated. Several hundred people travelled by the railway, which is now in regular working order between Napier and Hastings. The railway to Hastings was opened on October 12th. There was no public ceremony, but there was a private picnic of about 100 persons, which passed off satisactorily. There was an attempt to set fire to the Crown Hotel, at the Spit, last night. The constable on duty found a bundle of shavings md oiled rags burning underneath the biliard room. The fire was extinguished without any damage. £SO are offered as a reward by the police.
Wellington. Oct. 16. The Rangitlra had returned to Napier. It is supposed to have run short of coal and provisions during the late severe weather. A poll was taken to-day on the question for or against a free 'public library, which resulted in a majority of 214 against, only 21 voting for it. THIS DA Y'S TELEGRAMS. Auckland, Oct 17. At the meeting of the South British Insurance Company, the directors report was adopted. Messrs Chamberlain and Howard were re-elected directors. Arrived—Ship Zealandia, from London, with 300 immigrants. No sickness on board. Grahamstown, Oct 17 ! James Mackay, junr, has been trying to arrange with the Natives for a piece of land on which to hold the colonial prize firing. One old native land owner if obstructive, feeling sore at having had to pay rates for the spot desired is approachable both by water and land, and offers admirable facilities for rifle range and camping ground. Napier, Oct 17. The Rangatira has been obliged to put back here, short of coal and provisions, after being five days endeavoring to reach Wellington, meeting a continuance of bad weather. Hokitika, Oct 17. Meat of all kinds at famine prices. Last auction here bullocks realized £33 per carcass, or 55s to 70s per lOOlbs. Several of the butchers are closing their places temporarily, being unable to obtain supplies for customers. Dunedin, Oct 17. The inquiry into the cause of the Rattray street fire was continued to-day. Mrs Schmidt, proprietress of the house, said that Sausberg, the witness who said she set fire to the place, had given his evidence out of spite. He had proposed for her hand, and had been rejected. Sausberg denied this statement.
