GREAT SALE OF SHORTHORNS IN CHICAGO.
American Turf. Field, and. Farm, The sale of the Lyndal herd of shorthorns, the property of W. S. King, of Minneapolis, Minn., came off at Dexter Park, Chicago, on Thursday, May 21st. It was, with the single e xeeption of the sale of New 5 ork Mills blooded cattle, near Utica, the best sale ever held in this country. In all there were fiftv-eight cows and heifers and twentyone bulls sold. The first bull sold was the 2nd Duke of Hillhurst, calved July 17th, 1871. This bull brought 14,000 dols (£2800), the largest sum of money ever paid for a bull in this country. At the Utica sale the highest price paid for a bull was 12,000 dols (£2400) for 2nd Duke of Oneida, while the sth Duke of Wethorby sold recently in England for about 12,400 dols in our currency. The purchaser on the 21st inst was George Robbins, of London, England, who, it is understood, is acting for the Earl of Bective, one of Great Britain’s largest breeders. The 2nd Duke of Hillhurst is by Gth Duke of Geneva, out of Duchess 97th, she by 3rd Duke of Wharf dale. Hon John Wentworth, Chicago, tried hard to keep the bull in this country, bidding as high as 13,700 dols only recently, so it is reported. The sale of the Duke leaves but three Duke bulls in this country, all owned in Kentucky. The total amount realised on the cows was 101,615 dols, and on bulls 25,375 dols. The best sold cows were Lady Mary 7th, and Lady Mary Sth, twins, by 4th Lord Oxford out of Lady Mary, she by Hotspur out of Baroness. These two heifers sold for 11,000 dols.
