NEWS OF THE DAY.

The Governor, —Sir James Fergusson will leave in the Taranaki which sails this afternoon.

The Palmer. —A meeting of intending passengers for the Palmer rush is advertised to take place this evening. Palmer River Rush.— A meeting of intending passengers to this rush, will be held this evening, at the Borough Hotel, at eight o’clock.

Chamber op Commerce.—The monthly meeting for the election of members and transaction of general business will be held to-morrow at 3 p.m, Canterbury Archery Club;—The opening of the season takes place to-day. Shooting for prizes commenced punctually at four o’clock. Southbridge Railway.—We arc informed that the cause of dispute respecting the racecourse and Southbridge railway referred to in our leading article of yesterday has reference to the General Government, and not as stated to the Provincial authorities.

Christchurch Poultry Association.— The seventh annual meeting of this association will be held this evening at eight o’clock. Tickets of membership can be obtained from the hon. secretary at the meeting. A meeting of the committee will take place at half-past seven. Amberley.—On Monday evening a meeting of the public library committee was held, when Mr A. Greig, the chairman, read an interesting report upon the progress and benefits of that institution to the district. The balance sheet showed the receipts to be £56 4s, the expenditure, £55 18s 6d, leaving a small balance in hand. The new school committee were elected the library committee. A vote of thanks was passed to the chairman (Mr Greig), and he was unanimously re-elected chairman of the library committee.

Orangeism.— The usual monthly meeting of No 2 L.0.L., was held last evening at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Montreal street, when there was a goodly attendance of members. The newly elected W.M and D.M. were duly installed by the R.W.G.M., after which two candidates were introduced to the first degree. The usual lodge business was gone through, and the lodge closed at an early hour. Several visiting brethren were present from No 3 and Timaru lodges. A Royal Arch Purple Chapter in connection with No 1 L.O.L. will be convened in Lyttelton on Thursday night, and a number of Christchurch brethren intend paying a visit on the occasion.

Merxyale Entertainment. —An entertainment was given last evening in the Merivale schoolroom, Mr W. H. Lane in the chair. The attendance was not very large, owing no doubt to the unpropitious weather, and as many of the ladies and gentlemen who had promised to fake part in the entertainment were absent from the same cause, the programme was not a very long one. The musical portion consisted of the following:— Song —“ The murmur of the shell,” Madame Winter ; pianoforte selection—“ Home sweet home,” Madame Winter”; song- “The blind girl to her harp,” Miss Winter; duet, “ Hear me Norma,” Madame and Miss Winter ; trio, Mrs Palairet, Miss Little, and MrPalairet; pianoforte duet, Madame and Miss Winter; song, “The erl king,” Mr Price; quartette, “Goodnight,” Mrs Palairet, Miss Little, and Messrs Palairet and Price. The entertainment concluded with a piece called “ Out on the Sly ” by the Avonside amateurs which was capitally performed. A vote of thanks to the performers and to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
