CRICKET.

'UNITED CANTERBURY CRICKET CLUB. The U.C.0.0. opened the season on Saturday last by a match between sides chosen by the secretary and treasurer. The latter won the: toss and went in. The ground, as might be expected, after the continued wet weather, was very dead, and hot at all favorable for good cricket, and as there has hitherto been no practice of any kind, the play was not first class. The Treasurer’s side scored 34 in a little over an hour, Fuller being the only one who obtained double figures. He made two good hits to leg for each. The] Secretary’s side then went in and were not all out when rain put an end to play. Wood, who played very carefully, was not out for 16. At the termination of play, the Secretary’s side had made 32, or within two of their opponents, and had still five wickets to fall. The following is the score Teeasueee’s Side. A. M. The Christchurch Cricket Club opened their season on Saturday last, by a match. President v Yice-President being the respective teams. The ground, in consequence of the late heavy rains, played very dead, and large scores were consequently almost an impossibility. .About two p.m, the members gathered in strong force, and after tossing up, the Presidents’ team took the wickets, to the bowling of Sweet and Frith. Some very fair cricket was displayed considering the opening match, and they managed to keep their wickets up for the space of two hours, when they were all out for sixty-four rune. No time was lost, and as a very strong wind sprung up from the S.W. it was expected play would have to be discontinued for the day, but the. energetic captain of the 0.0. C. was not to be disappointed, and kept his men in the field. The Vice-President’s team made but an indifferent stand, slogging, apparently on account of the cold, being the order, and in about an hour and a quarter were all out for sixty-seven, being just three ahead of their opponents. We were very glad to see such a good muster of the club, and only hope they will continue to carry out the good example they set on this the opening day.
