SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

EAST CHbLVTCHORCH

A meeting of the East Christchurch district school committee was held on Tuesday, October 6th, Present —Mr W. H. Wynn Williams (chairman), Revs H. C. M. Watson and W. J. Habens, and Messrs Anderson and Pratt.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

Leave of absence was granted by request to Mr Dymock.

The chairman reported that the Rev H, C. M. Watson and himself had attended at the opening of the South town belt school, on Monday morning, that about eighty children had assembled, and, that he had with Mrs Haughton drafted about forty more from St John’s.

Mr Wilkin’s offer of a piece of land adjoining the South town belt school site, was again brought forward, consideration having been deferred from last meeting, and it was resolved to recommend the Board to purchase the land, provided it could bo obtained at the same rate per acre as was paid for the piece the committee hold. A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary, stating that the Government could not see their way to postponing the collection ©f the building rate, nor to its collection in instalments, and pointing out that the Bast Christchurch district has already had a considerable extension of time, as fourteen months had elapsed since its formation, and that a large sum of money had been spent, whereas, by the 52nd Section of the Ordinance, no aid is to be granted to any district unless there shall have been deposited in the Provincial Treasury a sum equal to onesixth of the estimated cost, &c, &c. A letter was read from the Board of Education, sanctioning Miss Anthony’s appointment as mistress of the South Town Belt School.

The report, as prepared by the chairman, for presentation to the annual meeting of householders, was discussed, and adopted, after the introduction of certain amendments.

After the transaction of some routine business, and the passing of some accounts, the meeting adjourned to Monday, the I2th inst, at 6.30.
