ROAD BOARDS.
RICCARTON.
The ordinary meeting of the Board was held on Saturday, at the office, Cashel street west. Present —Mes-rs Inwood, Nunweek, and Patterson.
In the absence of the chairman, Mr Inwood was voted to the chair.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The following correspondence was read : From the Secretary for Public Works (in reply to the Board's letter of the 21st Sepember), stating that since writing his letter of the 15th September the Government had >een advised .that there is no legal imnedinent to prevent the Board from reconstruct ng the Riccarton road, or altering the side if the footpath. From the Secretary for Public Works, relucsting to be furnished with a cony of the Board’s letter dated June 2Gth, 1873, re<P"cMng the occupation of reserve 93a, the original having been mislaid.
The clerk stat d that he had complied with the request,
From the Secretary of Public Works, stating that the owners of rural sections Nos <>BB, 989, 94, 70, 88, 115, and 117 respectively have offered to dedicate to the Superintendent an additional half chain on the north side of the Fendaltown road, on condition that the Government undertake to supply the necessary fencing, and that the Government has accepted their offer accordingly. The surveyor was directed to reply that the Board quite concurs in the proposal of the Government to widen the Fendaltown road, hut would suggest that part of rural section 199 be included, so as to make the road the «amo width to the Harewood and Fendaltown junction road. From the Secretary of Public Works, in reply to the Board’s letter of May 7th, respecting the clearing of the Waiararnpa stream, and stating that a sum was voted as a grant in aid for this purpose at the last session of the Council, and that the Government will be glad if the Board will call for tenders for the work required, and forward for the approval of the Government the tender which the Board recommends should be accepted. The surveyor stated that tenders had been invited for the work, but that none had been sent in. It was resolved to invite fresh tenders by Friday, the 9th instant. A circular was received from the Secretary for Public Works, enclosing the following resolution, passed by the Provincial Council at its last sitting, and asking to be informed to what extent the Board is prepared to give effect to it, viz : That it be a recommendation to Road Boards to erect guide posts legibly inscribed, in places where such may conduce to the convenience of the public, and that the Government be requested to give effect to the above resolution.”
The Board decided to consider the matter at its next meeting, and the surveyor was directed to enquire in the meantime if the Government propose to pay the costs incurred. Letters were read from—
Mr J. Abbott, asking, on behalf of the occupiers of land on the Kaiapoi and Prebbleton junction road, if the Board would gravel the said road from the Avon boundary to Mason’s corner. It was decided to comply with the request.
W. Kcay and Co, contractors for deepening the Papauui drain, stating that the surveyor was not satisfied with the work, but that, considering the wood and water to contend with, they had done their best. The surveyor was directed to inform the contractors that they must complete the work in accordance with the plan and specification, or forfeit the cost of such completion. Mr Buckley waited on the Board and offered to pay one-half the cost of forming a portion of the road between sections 961 and 4827. The Board accepted the offer, and the surveyor was directed to get the work done. A petition was received from Messrs Hackett, Craw, Henshaw, and five others, asking the Board to gravel the Waiararapa road.
The Board decided to comply with the request, and the surveyor was directed to invite tenders for the work.
The Board directed the surveyor to improve the drainage of Stanley’s and the Harewood and Fendaltown junction roads, by clearing a portion iof the Waiararapa creek ; also, to repair the Swamp road near Mrs Graham’s house. The rate collector was directed to sue for all outstanding rates.
The monthly report was read and approved. The clerk was directed to give notice that a meeting of ratepayers would be held at the Riccarton Hotel, on Friday next, the 9th instant, at noon, to nominate and elect a member to serve on the Board.
After passing accounts for work done, the Board adjourned.
