SOUTHBRIDGE SCHOOL.
On Tuesday, the 22nd instant, Mr C. J. Bridge, accompanied by Mr John Ollivier, chairman of the school committee, distributed several useful and instructive books, being prizes gained by the scholars in the Southbridge school at the last April examination.
The chairman opened the proceedings with a short address to the children, in which he congratulated them on the satisfactory state of the report given of the school by the inspector, and explained the reason why he had been unable to distribute the prizes before. He stated that the usual grant from the Board of Education had been liberally supplemented by voluntary contributions from the different members of the committee, so that he had been enabled to purchase a class of books, which he was sure the children would appreciate. He likewise hoped that they would continue to attend the school regularly, so that the next report of the inspector might be more satisfactory even than the last. The following is a list of the successful prize takers : First Class.—lst prize ; George Andrews, with 96 marks. 2nd prize : Edgar Andrews, with 85 marks. Second Class—lst prize : Mary Fergusson, with 84 marks. 2nd prize : Robert Moore, with 83 marks. 3rd prize : John Watson, with 83 marks. Third Class. —Ist prize : James Sullivan, with 92 marks. 2nd prize : James Bright, with 88 marks, 3rd prize: Alice Bright, with 88 marks. Three cheers having been given for Mr Bridge, and the master and mistress of the school, the children, by the liberality of the chairman, adjourned to the neighboring confectionery, where they were regaled with buns and other creature comforts suitable to their years.
