SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

~.„ EAST CHRISTOHURCH. A meeting of the East Christchurch district school committee was held on Wednesday the 23rd inst. Present—Mr W.H.Wynn Williams (chairman), and the Rev H. C. M. Watson, and Mr Dymock. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Mr Leach, collector of the household rate, attended with a supplementary report, advising the remission of rates in certain cases. It was resolved to recommend the Superintendent to remit the rates as mentioned by the collector. A letter was read from the Board of Education, sanctioning the appointment of a clerk of works at the main school building, Gloucester street. A report was read from Mr Farr, architect, as to the water supply, &c, and a proposed improvement in the method of ventilation at the Bingsland school was submitted. It was resolved to carry out the works as recommended by Mr Farr, subject to the sanction of the Board of Education, the estimated cost being £53. Another report from Mr Farr, in reference to fencing, water supply, drainage, and leveling at the South town belt school, was submitted. It was resolved to seek the sanction of the Board of Education to the above works, in the meantime the chairman was requested to call for tenders for the draining and levelling required. A report from the Rev W. J. Habens was submitted as to the teaching staff for the proposed infant school at the South town belt. The report as read was adopted, and it was resolved to open the said school for children under eight years only, on Monday, October sth ; that the sanction of the Board of Education be requested to the appointment of Miss Anthony as mistress, with Miss Kissel and Miss Jamieson as assistant pupil teachers, and that the hours be from half-past nine in the morning to a quarter to three in the afternoon. The chairman was authorised to procure a temporary supply of furniture. Applications for appointment from Miss Stansell as assistant mistress, and the Misses A. Henderson, E. Innes, and C. Allan as pupil teachers, were ordered to be entered on the list of applications. An offer from Mr Wilkin of a piece of land adjoining the South town belt school site for £SOO was received, and its consideration deferred. An application from Mr Fidler, Bingsland for an increase of salary was received, and consideration deferred. Mr Rankin, builder of the South town belt school, applied through Mr Farr for a bonus, as he had completed his contract six weeks within his specified time. Declined. It was decided to hold a special meeting of the committee to take into consideration the intended immediate levying of the building rate. After passing some accounts, the meeting adjourned.
