The Globe. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 1874.

The erection by the Government of cottages, in various parts of the country, for the use of newly arrived immigrants, will at once commend itself to the notice of those who have seen the good effects already produced by the steps. By this means, both the farmer and the immigrant have been benefited, and the class of labor most wanted in the country districts has been placed in spots best calculated to absorb it. There is however, one part of the country to which, we think most advantageously, this system might be extended, as tending in a very great degree to the development of an industry which is destined ere long to take a very prominent position amongst us. 'We allude to the Malvern Hills district. Here, in addition to coal, there are other mineral products only wanting labour to make them reproductive,, and to establish an industry which will be of incalculable, benefit to the colony at large, and this province in particular. Therefore the affording facilities for the opening up of the various mines there, by the erection of cottages for immigrants, would be of great benefit—equally, if not more so, with those -already erected. A source for the absorption of surplus labor—and a very large one —would be created, aud the trade generally of the province benefitted. We hope the Government will see their way to extend the system in the direction pointed out, feeling sure that the small outlay will be more than recouped by the advantages arising from the erection of the buildings, as proposed.
