ROAD BOARDS.

eiccarton. A special meeting of this Board was held on Saturday at the office, Cashel street west. Present —Messrs N unweek, Patterson, Hall, and Inwood. The clerk read a letter from the chairman, Mr G, A. Durey, tendering his resignation as member of the Board. On the motion of Mr Inwood, seconded by Mr Nunweek, Mr H. J. Hall was unanimously elected chairman. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved to accept the resignation of Mr G. A. Durey. Letters were read from Mrs Deans, and Messrs Duncan and Jameson, objecting to the removal of the footpath from the north side of the Eiccarton road. . . , Mr Deans waited on the Board, and stated that the present footpath on the Eiccarton road was made by the Government to protect the thorn fence on the Eiccarton estate, and that its removal would damage the property. The Board informed Mr Deans that the works now in hand would, when completed, add considerably to the value of his estate, and that the greatest care would be taken not to interfere with the fence. A letter was read from the Secretary for Public Works, enclosing Provincial Government Gazette , and stating that the proprie tors of the Eiccarton estate complain that their property is being damaged by the breaking up of the footpath on the Eiccarton road, and that the Government presumes that the work now being done is for the repairs or reconstruction of the path. The surveyor was directed to reply that the footpath in question being on the wrong side of the road, and consequently impossible to keep in order for pedestrians, the Board had entered into a contract for making a path on the south side, and for the reconstruction of the north side of the road (40 chains). Also, that the Board is advised that the notice in the Gazette does not except any part of the road from its jurisdiction, arid that the Board is aware that carrying out any improvements for the benefit of the public will always give offence to some. The Board directed the surveyor to remove the culvert crossing the Sawyer’s Arms road, and erect a bridge instead thereof. Also, to arrange with the contractor for the supply of of an extra quantity of gravel for the north side of the Eiccarton road. The chairman was directed to give notice that the nomination and election of a m< mber to fill the place of Mr Durey, would be held at the Eiccarton Hotel, on Friday, the 9th October, at noon. The Board then adjourned until the 3rd of October. OUST. The ordinary monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the Road Board office on Monday last, September 14th. Present—Messrs Higgins (chairman), Dickinson, and Conway. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was read : From the Secretary for Public Works, advising how to deal in reference to the immigrants’ cottages, also enclosing rules formed by the Lincoln Road Board. From the same, stating that the Provincial Government would allow £l5O to plant trees on Government reserves in the district. From the district engineer, relative to crossing on main road. From the West Eyreton Board, asking if the Board would agree to form and metal Boundary road. The clerk was directed to reply, stating they were willing to pay half the cost. From the contractor for building immigrants’ cottages, stating that two of them were now finished, and that the remaining two would be finished on Thursday next. Tenders were received for fencing in gravel pit on main road, fencing reserves for planting trees, &c, clearing drain on main road, and sundry repairs in McOlinton’sroad, one tender in each case being accepted. A requisition was read from nine ratepapers, resident on the North-east downs, petitioning the Board to shingle Gatherwood’s road. The Board resolved to call for tenders for same. The clerk was instructed to call for tenders for the following works: —Ee-forming cutting on Boundary road, screening 500 yards metal, re-forming and shingling Mill road, shingling part of Pawsey’s road, and shingling Gather wood’s road. The collector handed in amount of rates collected, £6O. Accounts to the amount of £4Ol Is Id were received and passed for payment, and the Board adjourned. SOUTH EAKAIA. The monthly meeting of this Board was held for the first time in the new office. It was resolved that tenders be called for the cuttings on West Coast road, as per clerk’s report No 1. That tenders be called for completion of Rakaia road to Acton station. That tenders be called for the formation of Main Rakaia road from Allen’s upper boundary to the junction with Ashburton branch road, and from said junction along said branch road for a distance of one mile. The clerk was instructed to place two culverts, as suggested by Mr Coster, on the Alford Forest road, and to place two culverts on the Main Rakaia road in the necessary places. Also to employ the immigrants in raising the depressed levels on same road, and reducing the abrupt rises or heights. And also to lay off a cutting over the Spaxton terrace on Ashburton branch road, and let the same by private contract. It was resolved that a rental of six shillings per week be charged for each of the six immigrant cottages in Rakaia township, dating from entry of occupancy, and three shillings per week for cottages about to be erected on township reserve, and that Mr Boulton, barrack-master, be appointed collector of rents. The monthly accounts for wages, &c, were passed and paid, amounting to £ll4 14s lOd. The meeting stands adjourned to Thursday, October 15th.
