THE DEPUTY PROVINCIAL AUDITOR FOR CANTERBURY.
To the Editor of the Globe, SIR, —My attention has been called to the correspondence and leading article in your paper, respecting the manner in which the business of the Provincial Government Audit office has been recently conducted, and complaining of delays in passing vouchers for payments of accounts. Personally I may say, that I have held the office of DeputyProvincial Auditor, under warrant, dated 19th November, 1861. I can, however, only act when called upon under medical certificate, of the illness of the provincial auditor, or certificate under the auditor’s hand, that he is about to be absent, and requires my attendance at the office. Unless, while acting, there is no pay attached to the office of Deputy Provincial Auditor. During the late Mr Thomson’s term of office as Provincial Auditor, I acted on several occasions, but the present auditor, Mr J. Ollivier, never having called upon me to act, I may presume there had been no requirement for my attendance to the duties of the audit office. Yours, &c, H. E. ALPORT, Deputy Provincial Auditor. Christchurch, 21st Sept., 1874.
