THE PROVINCES.
OTAGO. The Guardian of the 12th says : A large and influential meeting of residents of Dunedin, Forbury, Anderson’s Bay, Portobcllo, and neighboring districts was held yesterday at noon, in the Provincial Hotel. The meeting, which was of a private character, was convened by circular, of which the following is a copy: —“ Proposed Peninsula and Ocean Beach Railway Company (Limited). — Dunedin, September 4th, 1874. —Sir, —I am requested to invite your attendance at a meeting of those interested in or favorable to the above project, to be held at the Provincial Hotel, on Friday, the 11th instant, at twelve o’clock. Should you, prior to the meeting, come into, contact with any one interested in the matter, whose name I may have overlooked, I shall be obliged by your inviting them to be present.—l am, &c., J. B. Bradshaw.” Mr E. B. Cargill was voted to the chair. Amongst the gentlemen present was his Honor the Superintendent, who warmly endorsed the proposal. The project, he said, was one which he had no doubt the Government would be prepared to facilitate in every way that lay within its power. At the same time it was, he thought, an undertaking which should be left in the hands of a company such as the one proposed to be formed. The following cost of the line, taken from a rough estimate made out by a competent surveyor, was submitted: —From Dunedin to Ocean Beach, 2\ miles, £7,000; from near Mr Tolmie’s home to Portobello, 9$ miles, £30,000; from thence to the Heads, miles, £IB,OOO : total estimated cost, £55,000. From what transpired, it would appear that this estimate is rather in excess of the actual amount that would be required. The meeting unanimously approved of the proposal, and a provisional committee was elected to collect information, with the view of submitting a draft prospectus at a future meeting, to be called for the purpose of forming a company to carry out the work ; said committee to consist of : Messrs E. B. Cargill Christie, R. M, Robertson, Raiobird, Thomas Reynolds, Seaton, James MHndoe, Green, D. Eainford, William Robertson, Cutten, George Wilson, William Bacon, Larnach, Adam Begg, James Smith, George G. Robertson, and Taiaroa, with power to add to their number. Mr J. B. Bradshaw was elected hon secretary. The Dunstan Times has been privately informed that, on an analysis by Professor Black, of Dunedin, of a variety of brands of brandies, that sulphuric acid, in a greater or less degree, was detected in each. W e learn, says the Guardian that the appointment of Assistant - Analyst has been offered to and accepted by Mr Saul Solomon, a student at the University. This gentleman at the last New Zealand University Scholarship examinations took honors in the chemistry classes. Mr Solomon is one of Dr Black’s most promising pupils ; and this additional distinction gained by him will be heard of with pleasure by his old fellowstudents in the High school, where his early successes in this branch of study were attained. The salary attached to the appointment is £75 per annum. We are informed (alleges the Daily Times), that it is intended shortly to commence the publication of the Dunedin Diocesan Journal, which will be of the same size as the New Zealand Church News. The circular states that —“ The object of the publication would be the promotion of corporate unity by the circulation of information as to Church work and progress in every part of the Diocese, while at the same time, matters of interest relating to the Church in every part of the world would be introduced, together with leading articles upon the questions of the day, both social and political, with especial reference to their religious aspects and bearing.”
