Auckland, September 11. 630 fat sheep sold at higher rates ; dairy cows, £5 to £9 10s ; calves, 25s to 42s ; fat cattle, 35s to 45s ; sheep, 5d per lb. ; ewes and lambs, 24s 6d ; couple of store wethers, 10s. Breadstuffs are improving—flour, £l3 10s to £l4 ; oats, 5s 3d to (5s 3d ; barley 5s 6d ; wheat, 6s to 6s 3d ; butter is very scarce, at Is 3d ; cheese, 8d to Is 2d ; hams and bacon, lOd to lid ; hams, Is Id co Is 2d; potatoes, £9. September 12. Mr Bevericlge, Provincial Solicitor, has died after protracted illness. Yatterina is scratched for the Canterbury Handicap, owing to excessive weight. Te Whaka, the chief who murdered Nuku at Hokianga'in 1868, sentenced to death, but afterwards committed to imprisonment for life but escaped from gaol three months afterwards, has been living concealed with friends. He came into town with the Hokianga It. M. to-day, and received a free pardon. Napier, September 11. At a cattle sale to-day 293 head realised £1734. MK. MONTGOMERY AT AKAKOA. Akaroa, September 13. Mr Montgomery addressed the electors in the town hall last night. There was a large attendance. The Superintendent was present. The address lasted for nearly two hours. On the question of the abolition of the provinces he spoke strongly against so large a constitutional change being introduced without the people being first consulted. He contrasted the General Government expenditure with the Provincial, and the results derivable therefrom, alleging that Mr Yogel would not get less expensive or more efficient machinery. He contended, again, that the country should have the opportunity of properly expressing its opinion by a dissolution. This was received with loud cheers. A unanimous vote of thanks was passed. THIS DA TS TELEGRAMS. Wellington, September, 14th. The Nov Zealand limes says Mr Vogel anticipates that he will be back in Wellington within five or six months of the date of his departure. Sir Donald M'Lean will visit his constituents at Hawkes Bay at an early date. Auckland, September 14. The Luna has arrived. r J he Macgregor is due with the English San I'rancisco mail. Messrs Vogel and Russel are expected to proceed to Sydney in her. [FROM A CORRESPONDENT.] Dunkdin, September 14. There is no foundation for the report that Mr Creighton goes home. He takes the editorship of the New Zealand Times.
