KAIAPOI COUNCIL.
To the Editor of the Globe, Sib, —Reading your reports of the municipal election proceedings in this evening’s issue, I was considerably astonished at the result of the Kaiapoi election. So far as I am aware the three candidates returned may be good men and true, but it certainly seems that talent was plentiful when the ratepayers there threw out one of the Beswicks ; the founders of that town in short, he a man too who has held the position of Secretary of Works as well as Provincial Treasurer, who has had his gay time in the Provincial Council and General Assembly, an associate of the learned and talkative, an admirer of the world famed Bickerton; designed one day for the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer in the British Parliament as his budget speeches in the Provincial Council indicated; and who, in fact, possessing a towering ambition for position and power, might have some day been Emperor of the Britain of the South. A prophet truly is without honor in his own country. Lo, how are the mighty fallen! He who was intended to represent Mandeville throughout succeeding generations, had at last election to give place to a miller. They who choose upper room* have often to fall into back seats. The Kaiapoi folks, I infer, do not see what an immense advantage they would have gained by placing him in the town council. Well, they know best. They have despised a man who no doubt considers that his name is ‘ On Fame’s eternal bead-roll worthy to be fyled.’ ‘ But a t ; me will come.’ This brings me to my point. Can you tell me, Sir, when this time does come, what is likely to happen? and oblige, Yours, &c., COCK ROBIN, Christchurch, Sept, 11, 1871.
