ROAD BOARDS.

TEMPLETON,

The Board met at the office, the Talbot, Yaldhurst, on September 7th. Present —The Chairman, Messrs Bailey, Carpenter, Hepworth, and Sinclair. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, A letter was read from Secretary for Public Works, asking Board to furnish them with plans and estimate of the cost of two-roomed cottages.Also a letter from Provincial .Treasury, enclosing a cheque for £lsl on account of the grant to district under the Payments to Provinces Act, 1872. Also a letter from Road Board chairmen, enclosing copy of case tried at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Ellesmere Road Board v Fisher. That the clerk be directed to ascertain whether the Reserve No 321 was let. The clerk was directed to call for tenders for forming about 40 chains Buchanan’s road, 1 chain wide, from Pound road to Bucknail’s road ; also, for forming 1 chain wide, from Templeton station to Jeff’s corner; also, reforming north side of West Coast road, from corner of Pound road to Topham corner.

The pay sheet, amounting to £lB7 18s 5d having been adopted and passed, the Board then adjourned.

BYRETON.

The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Monday last. Present—Messrs Dixon (chairman), Bradley, Coup, and Dailey. Letters were read:—

From the Secretary for Public Works, acknowledging receipt of a letter from the Board offering to contribute £SOO towards extra cost of taking the Eyreton Railway from the road.

From the same, stating that the Provincial Government wish to have plans and specifications of the immigrants’ cottages submitted to them for approval. From Mr T. H. Potts, chairman of committee of Road Board chairmen, forwarding result of lawsuit —Fisher v Ellesmere Road Board.

From Mr J. Kinley, desiring that two cul verts would be put in to enable him to gei on his land.

The surveyor was instructed to request Mx Eckersley to put in the culverts referred to by Mr Kinley. From Mr J. Davis, requesting that the Board would have the work at the Eyre bridge approaches done forthwith. From Mr J. S. White, requesting the Board to form the road from sec 1691 to sec 6971, from Ohoka bush to the Tramroad. The Board, considering there were other works of more pressing importance requiring attention, declined to accede to the request. From Messrs King and Alloway, requesting to be allowed £4 for extra work on Bradley’s road.

The Board agreed to allow £2, From the Mandeville and Rangiora Road Board, stating that in consequence of alterations in plans and specifications for the main drain bridge, made by the Provincial Engineer, extra expense had been entailed in carrying out the work, and requesting the Board to pay £llß 4s 6d, being half the cost in excess of; the Government grant of £250, making the bridge to cost £486 9s. The clerk was instructed to reply that the Board had agreed to contribute £25, and did not acknowledge any further liability. Mr Coup reported that Mr Clark, on behalf of Mr W. Cherry, was willing to sell three acres of section 1979 for £24, for an outlet for the Eyre flood water, on condition it was not used for any other purpose, and no claim to be made for damage. Mr Strachan had also agreed to take £SO for the good will of his lease, and would make no further claim for damage. It was resolved to accept Messrs Clark and Strachan’s offers.

The surveyor was instructed to serve notices on all persons permitting gorse to grow on to the road, and to have the same advertised.

The surveyor’s report was read and re' ceived. i

Mr James Baker waited on the Board to obtain assistance in forming the road fronting section 7192. The Board agreed to contribute £l4, the work to be done to its satisfaction. Tenders were then considered for Coup’s road, Tram road, Wyatt’s road, Jackson’s road, North road, and repairs to roads. The surveyor was instructed to order timber for two bridges on North road, and invite tenders for a number of works.

It was resolved to purchase six wheelbarrows, and that new arrivals applying for work be employed in shingling the Tram road.

Messrs R. and G. Coup promised £7 towards shingling Coup’s road. Accounts amounting to £2Bl 7s 8d were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned.
