ROAD BOARDS.
EICCARTON. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held on Saturday, at the office, Cashel street west. Present: Messrs Inwood, Nunweek, Hall, and Patterson. In the absence of Mr Durey, Mr H. J. Hall was voted to the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. Tenders were received for various works, and one was accepted in each case. A letter was read from Mr E. M. Templar, stating that the gorse on the Fendalltown road, adjoining Mr Boag’s property, is the cause of much inconvenience to the public, the road being encumbered with it, and requesting the Board to have it cleared. It was resolved that Mr Boag be served with notice to cut and clear all gorse on the public roads adjoining his property. A letter was read from D. Arps, asking to be allowed to cultivate part of a public road adjoining Section 4827. The Board declined to grant the request. A letter was received from Mr Potts, hon secretary, committee of Canterbury Road Boards chairmen, enclosing a report of the case of the Ellesmere Road Board v Fisher. Mr Bridge’s letter (which had been deferred for consideration) in reference to the above subject, and asking for suggestions necessary to be incorporated in a new Roads Ordinance, was then considered, and after much discussion, it was unanimously resolved—“ That in the opinion of the Riccarton Road Board, Provincial Governments will soon be abolished ; the Board therefore do not consider it necessary to make any suggestions relative to a new Provincial Act.” A letter was read from the Secretary for Public Works (in reply), stating that the Government will at once take steps to abate the nuisance arising from the railway culvert in Washbourn’s drain. A letter was read from the Assistant-Secre-tary for Public Works, enclosing a report from Mr Ward, Government Clerk of Works, on gravel reserves at Fendaltown. The consideration of this letter was deferred for an explanation from the chairman. A letter was read from the secretary for Public Works, advising that the sum of £296 was available out of the provincial grant, for general purposes. A letter was received from Mr Goodland enclosing the petition (which had been entrusted to him for the purpose of obtaining signatures), asking his Honor the Superintendent to enquire into the proposed exchange of gravel reserves at Fendaltown. It was resolved —“ To forward the petition to his Honor, with a copy of the resolution passed at the last annual meeting of ratepayers in reference to Reserve 98A. The surveyor was directed to write to Messrs J. T. Peacock and D_. Douglas, as owner and occupier of sections 798 and 189 A, and state that the Board will deepen the drain through the said sections, if they will fence it off so as to prevent cattle from crossing. The surveyor reported that Wills and Co. had been sued for breach of contract to Donald’s road, and that the amount claimed by the Board, with costs, had been recovered . The clerk handed in the new rate roll, and stated that copies were deposited for inspection at the Riccarton Hotel, and at the office of the Secretary for Public Works. The monthly report was read and approved. Accounts for work done were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned until the first Saturday in October.
