GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
(Per Anglo-Australian Press Telegragh Agency.)
In the Legislative Council, In answer to the Hon Mr Waterhouse, the Hon Dr Pollen said a proposition had been maaeof an imperfect and unsatisfactory character for the maintenance of a temporary Californian service. The breakdown had been so sudden that there was no time for anything else than telegraphic communication. The Government had been invited to concur with New Mouth Wales in establishing a temporary service, but the arrangements were so imperfect that it was better for the Government to stand aside for the present, and allow the complication between tue contractors to clear itself. It was the intention of the Government at the earliest opportunity to make arrangements for a permanent service. In the meantime they would take care that no interruption of postal communication would take place. The mails would be forwarded by Suez. The Appropriation Bill was passed. On the second reading of the Otago Public Works Advances Bill, The Hon Mr Waterhouse expressed his surprise at seeing Otago going in for the general scramble for crumbs from the rich man’s table. The Government would soon have to assume the charge of that province. The Hon Capt. Frazer said the people of Otagowould repudiate receiving eleemosynary aid. The second reading was passed, the Hon Captain Fraser and the Hon Mr Chamberlain being the only dissentients.
