Canterbury Railways.—lt is notified in our advertising columns that, a market train will leave Christchurch for Diihsandel at 4.35 p.m. on and after Saturday next. Lecture.—We remind our readers that the lecture on the " Transit of Venus," by the Rev W. T. Habens, will be given this evening, in the Oddfellows' Hall. Mr G. C. Bowen, R.M., will preside. The Railways.—On looking over the new time table posted at the railway stations, we note the following :—" Tickets are issued on Saturdays at single fares available for the return journey up to Monday night." St. Luke's Entertainment.—The usual weekly entertainment in connection with St. Luke's parish, was given last evening in the schoolroom, when there was a good attendance: The programme, comprising vocal and instrumental music, readings, &c, was gone through very successfully. Malvern Hills Railway.—The ballasting of the line from Rolleston to Malvern Hills is finished, and there only remain the sidings at the latter station and Colonel's Corner to be done to complete the whole. Corresponding progress has not, however, been made with the necessary buildings on the line. ~ • Professor Bickerton's Lectures.— The third of the series of lectures by Professor Bickerton was delivered last night in the [Oddfellows' Hall, and was largely attended. The subject was the effect of heat upon bodies, and it was illustrated throughout by a number of interesting experiments, Large Eel.—An eel weighing nearly twelve pounds was captured yesterday by a man with a pitchfork, near the Armagh street bridge. Several of these monsters have lately been seen up the river,-no doubt paying a visit to the spawning beds of the trout. Volunteer Inspection. The usual monthly inspection by the Colonel commanding the district, took place last evening at the drill shed. The Artillery, Engineers, City Guards, and cadets paradsd under their respective officers, the muster being a very creditable one. After the inspection the men were put through manual and platoon exercise and company drill. The headquarters band was present, and played at intervals. City Council Nominations.—The nominations for the vacant seats in the City Council, caused by the retirement by rotation of Messrs Ick, Gapes, and Lane, closed yesterday at 4 p.m. Mr Laue declined to stand for re-election, and the candidates now before the ratepayers are Messrs John Lee, A. I. Raphael, W. Schmidt, C. T. Ick, E. H. Banks, and J. Gapes. The polling will take place on the 10th September next, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hokitika Coach.—TheHokitika coach did not arrive in Christchurch until past one o'clock this morning. On reaching Kelly's Creek it was found to be too swollen by the late fresh to risk crossing with the coach, so another coach had to be telegraphed for from town, which arrived in due course, and the passengers were brought safely to their journey's end. Smith's Combination Troupe. The Smith Combination Troupe will give their final entertainment in the Lyttleton Colonists Hall to-night, and we hope will be liberally patronised. The drum and fife band from the orphanage are to play, and we hear that some amateurs are also likely to assist, so that it. is probable there will a good variety. The Troupe sail to-morrow for Dunedin in the Phoebe,

NORTHERN AGRICULTUBAL AND PASTORAL Association.—The general committee of this association met in the Road Board office, Rangiora, on Thursday afternoon. About twenty members were present, Mr J. Macf arlane in the chair. The business of the meeting was to finish compiling the catalogue commenced at last meeting, which having been completed, a working committee of twenty-two was appointed to make and carry out the arrangements for the forthcoming show. This committee will meet on Thursday next. A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. California Minstrels.—There was a capital house last night at the Theatre Royal, when a good programme was gone through successfully. Messrs Sutton and JKelly in their double songs and dances, appear thoroughly to have hit the taste of their audience, as they were recalled twice over, and even then, some exacting persons required more. The various sketches went well, as did Mr Amery's song and the voeal quartette. To-, night will be the last, and the performance is under the patronage of his Worship the Mayor and others. The late Concert in Lyttelton.—The final committee meeting in connection with the late concert for the benefit of the wife and children of the late Captain Hart, took place on Tuesday evening, in Lyttelton, Mr Yule occupying the chair. An examination of the receipts showed that the net amount realised was £35.' The committee proposed a vote of thanks to the ladies and gentlemen assisting at the concert, arid to the Lyttelton Times, Press, and Messrs Jones and Tombs, for advertising and printing gratuitously. The secretary was instructed to write to the committee of the Colonists' Hall, asking that the amount charged for the Hall on that occasion be kindly refunded. A vote of thanks to the chairman brought the meeting to a close. i Heathcote Road Board.—The members of the Heathcote Road Board held a special meeting on Thursday, 27th inst, for the purpose of considering tenders and other matters, when it was resolved that as the tenders for improvements 'on the Sumner road were in excess of the sum voted for that purpose, that the tenders be forwarded to the Government. Tenders for carting Shingle on to the Ferry road were opened, and' one at 3s 3d accepted. ' Specifications and plans for improvements on the Sumner road, at the cutting, were received from the Government, asking the Board to call for tenders "for' the .work.:' .;' Our. New. Governor.—We take the following'notice from " Men of the Time " : " The Most Noble George Augustus Phipps, Marquis i-of Normanby, only son of the first Marquis, born July 23rd, 1819, entered the [ Scots Fusilier Guards in 1838, and was Controller, and subsequently Treasurer of,the Qijieen'shousehold from 1853 till 1858, when he was' appointed Governor of Nova' Scotia. As Lord Mulgravehe was member for Scarborough in'the Liberal interest from 1847 to 1851, and from 1852 till 1857. He was sworn aPrivy Councillor da'lßsl, and succeeded to his father's title July 28th, 1863, , yrhen he resigned, his foreign,- appointment and returned to England. He was appointed .Captain of the Corps of. Gentlemen-at-Arms ' December 17th, 1869, and held that office till April Bth, 1871, when he was nominated Governor of Queensland." I'• | Papanui Cricket Club.—A meeting of the committee of the above was held .on Tuesday evening last, Mr C. C. C. Duncan in the chair. The chairman brought under; the notice of the meeting a letter received by the captain of the club from the incumbent relative to the retention or otherwise of the present ground. After some discussion,: Mr J. T Matson moved—" That tthe secretary insert an advertisement calling a special general meeting of the club, to be held at the Papanui Hotel on Saturday, August 29th, for the purpose of considering a letter received by the captain from the incumbent of the parish in reference to the cricket ground." , Mr i Hacksecpmied which., was- agreed to!
