Gkahahstown, August 22
A crowded meeting was held last night, when the following resolutions were adopted: :—" That this meeting cordially approve of the resolutions passed by the General Assembly for the abolition of the provinces in the North Island, and trust that the same policy will be extended to the South Island, as it believes the time has arrived when provincialism should be superseded by a simple inexpensive form of self-Government. 2. That an equitable and well-devised scheme for the re-adjustment of the representation should be passed by the Assembly before any appeal is made to the constituencies on the question of abolishing the provinces." Further resolutions were carried to the effect that copies of the resolutions be sent to the Speakers of both Houses, and to the Premier. The Mayor occupied the chair. Mew Plymouth, August 22.
The trout ova have been safely placed in the breeding compartment. About 90 per cent were alive when they reached here. The Taranaki Herald to-day, in an article re the abolition of the provinces, says the quicker the Assembly carries it out the better for the colony ; and in Auckland, and all outside Queen and Wyndham streets, they are in favor of the abolition of the provinces. Dunedin, August 22.
There was a great fire this morning at four o'clock in Messrs Guthrie and Larnach's saw mills, K. and T. Ilaworth's store, and the Spanish restaurant escaped with difficulty. The old Immigration Barracks narrowly escaped. The loss is about £35,000. Mr Larnaoh is heavily insured. No cause is known for the file, but it is supposed to have originated from the furnace.
