EAST CHRISTCHURCH EDUCATIONAL DISTRICT.
A meeting of the committee was held on Tuesday afternoon. Present —Mr W. Pratt, chairman, the Rev W. J. Habens, Messrs Anderson, and Dymock. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The chairman reported that he had seen Mr Hill, the master of the Avonside school, with reference to the cleaning of the Bingsland school, and had learnt that Mrs To ld would undertake to do the work. It was resolved—“ That Mr Hill should be authorised to arrange with Mrs Hill for the cleaning.” Mr Leech, the rate-collector, attended, and made an interim report, in which he recommended the remission of certain rates on the ground of poverty. The secretary was instructed to send the report to the Superintendent endorsed with the recommendation of the committee that the rates mentioned should be remitted. Mr Leech asked the committee for instructions with respect to the charge to be made for children over thirteen years of age. The secretary was instructed to procure a copy of the regulations of the Board of Education, having reference to this point. The chairman reported the result of his interview with the chairman of the West Christchurch district committee, in reference to joint action in the employment of masters for French and drawing. It was resolved to continue the endeavor to arrange a definite scheme in conjunction with the West Christchurch committee for the employment of French and drawing masters.
Correspondence was read from the Board of Education, approving the action of the committee on the various matters considered at the previous meeting. A letter was read from Mr Wm. M‘Clure, explaining the cause of his son’s absence from his duties as pupil teacher. The ]Rev W. J. Habens reported that he had been unable to meet with a pupil teacher to supply Master M‘Glare’s place. The secretary was instructed to insert an advertisement in the papers for a pupil teacher.
A letter was read from Mr Farr, architect, stating the course he had pursued in the matter of the division-fence on the Bingsland school ground ; that the Bingsland school with furniture complete would be ready for occupation on Monday, 24th instant ; that the South town belt school would be ready for occupation in three months from date, and requesting that a sub-committee should be appointed to meet him on the respective sites of these schools to arrange for the fencing required to be carried out on them ; also, that instructions should be given him with respect to the furniture for the South town belt school.
It was resolved that Mr Pratt be requested to arrange with Mr Hill, master of the Avonside school, for removing the scholars to Avonside ; and that Messrs Thomas and Guff be requested to meet Mr Farr and arrange for the fencing necessary on the Bingsland and South town belt school sites.
Consideration of the supply of furniture for the South town belt was deferred until a future meeting. Mrs Hanghton applied for some additional articles of furniture for the St John’s school. The Rev H. C. M. Watson and Mr W. Dymock were requested to arrange for supplying the articles required. Several accounts were passed, and the committee then adjourned.
