COMMERCIAL.
Melbourne—The "Argus " of August lstreports —ln the import markets, business generally is still quiet, and though a fair amount of sales is reported, yet these are confined to one or two specialties. Breadstuffs are moving off very slowly. Flour in bakers' lots is disposed of at £13155, bags returned; for parcels, £l3 5s is wanted, and we do not hear of sellers under. Wheat is quoted at 6s 3d for best quality, but there is none offering, and no sales are reported. Oats are very quiet; quotations for feeding range from 4s 9d to ss, and us 3d is asked for milling. The J. Nicol Fleming, which has arrived from New Zealand, brings wheat, oats, and barley. Maize is still quoted at 4s 7d, and the market appears a shade firmer; sales can now be made more freely at the price. New season's teas are still going off very readily. Of the Legislator's, 1500 packages additional have been quitted at is 8d to 2s 3d, and about 450 packages of the Amoy's have also been sold. Sales of old teas are likewise mentioned at Is to Is 2d. Kerosene is in moderate request. We hear of 1000 cases of Devoe's having been placed at Is 5d for transhipment. Other business is also reported, though not at so extreme a price. Malt, in trade parcels, is saleable at up to lis Gd. A line of 3000 bushels has changed hands at a concession ou that rate, however. A parcel of Barrett's twist has been sold at Is sjd. In liquids a large business has been done, chiefly at auction. Further considerable sales privately have been effected likewise. Under the hammer, ports were disposed of at £22 10s to £25 for common, and £3B 10s to £44 for medium. Low sherries realised £23 10s to £25 10s for common ; low medium brought £lO to £l3, and fine medium £54 to £OO. Brandies were got rid of at prices showing no improvement on the late decline. One hundred and fifty hhds and quarters Bisquit Dubouche's were cleared off at 7s to 7s Id. Privately we learn of 2,"i0 hhds Martell's and Ilennessy's having, in addition to previous sales reported, been taken up on terms withheld. Otard's case was disposed of at 245; Martell's three-star, dark and pale, brought 31s to 40s (id ; and Denis Mounie's from 2us to 2'js 6d. Whisky was sold at 5s Od for bulk.
AUSTEALIAN COKX MARKETS.
The " Australasian" of August Ist reports : At the close of last week the market for breadstuffs exhibited a little improvement. Bakers' lots were moving at £l3 15s to £l4, bugs returned, and parcels were more freely inquired for; a line of GO tons was reported sold at £l3 7s Gd. On Monday the market was still firm, but little 'business was done. Yesterday, the tone of the market was dull; at auction, a small parcel of flour was offered, and to effect a sale a slight reduction on quoted rates was accepted, but only 10 tons were allowed to go at £l3 2s Gd. Privately, however, a much larger line was placed at £l3 ss. The business of this forenoon is a repetition of yesterday's; a small lot of flour was permitted to go at auction at £l3 2s Gd, but sales were made privately at 2s Gd advance on that figure. Wheat is very saleable at quotations, but the qnantity offering is small. On Monday, one line of 850 bags was placed at equal to our quotation of Gs Id to (is 5d for prime Northern. To-day, at auction, 250 bags poor quality realised from 6s lid to Gs 0.U1; for prime the higher rates abovementioned can be readily got. Oats are not altogether neglected, but there is very little doing; inquiries are experienced, but without leading to any practical result. Ordinary to good feeding are quoted at Is 9d to ss. Tasmanian were quitted yesterday under the hammer at Is lOd to 4s lid. Sales of maize have been made at 4s 7d, the market having become easier since the arrival of supplies. Barley remains unchanged; in the absence of transactions of moment, we repeat our previous quotations of Is 7d to Is sd for feeding and Gs 3d to Gs 5d tor malting. Bran is worth Is 5.V1: pollard. Is 9d to is lod. " Mauritius.—The" Argus " reports—The arrival of the Floddenplaces ns in possession of Mauritius advices to ilth June. Messrs Ireland. Frnzer and Co, under date 28th May, state that second-class yellow sugars were most difficult to lind. Stocks of all kinds were small, except, Bombay whites in native merchants' hands, and these we're well held. Freights were Stationary at 2('s, and exchange 2} per cent, on Australia. One private communication, to 11th June, states that; the 10. J. Spencc and Madura were loading for Melbourne, and there were two inquiries besides for freight for Melbourne and Sydney, The Flodden was the only departure for this port since the Glaslyn left ou tliu 16th May,
