A Calcutta telegram of the 27th Maystates that the Government is now supporting 2,750,000 people in the famine districts, including those receiving charitable relief. Distress is increasing in Burdwan, but is fully met by the authorities. The high caste people, unable to work, are receiving charitable relief. There has been a good rainfall. A “Times” telegram states that Sir John Strachey declares the emergency to be unlike a severe famine in Bengal, The weekly telegram of the Viceroy, which is dated the 23rd instant, states that since the Ist of November 674,000 tons of grain have been sent to the famine districts, including that forwarded by trade firms, but exclusive of considerable quantities sent by water. Four more deaths from starvation are said to have taken place, making twentysix in all. Other items of news received by telegraph are that Sir James Outrarn’s statue was unveiled on the 22nd inst by Lord Napier in presence of the Viceroy ; and that the Ameer of Afghanistan has ordered precautions to be taken against Yakoob Khan’s threatened advance on Oandahar,
