Globe Office, Saturday

The grain market has been almost entirely at a standstill, no sales whatever having transpired. Wheat is nominally saleable at 4s Gd for prime parcels and 4s to 4s 3d for medium. Flour is unaltered, and finds a fair demand for bakers’ parcels, at £ll 10s in 2001 b sacks, and £l2 in 1001 b bags. The downward tendency of the English market is not likely to improve values. The large arrival of 6000 sacks of oats in Auckland, by the Cyphreues, from Sau Francisco, and the advices that regular shipments may be expected by each steamer, has completely stopped orders. For the present the market appears almost paralysed, and buyers do not care to operate. In Melbourne also oats were much lower, a decline of fully Gd per bushel having resulted. Haras and bacon meet a steady demand at Bid for bare and ( Jd in cloth. Cheese is sold at Gd to Butter is quiet at Is. A very slight improvement has been experienced in the import markets during the past week, the weather interfering greatly with up country trade. There have been no arrivals from England since our last, but stocks in some lines are very heavy. We note the sailing of the Atrato has been delayed until the l()th of August, owing to the rough weather preventing her loading as fast° as could be desired, i j Sales in cement have been made at 235, the demand being greater than the supply. In galvanised iron (best brands), a few sales have taken place at £35 15s to £3G, Slates—dull, at last quotation. Spirits-■ Hennessy’s pale brandy, several small lots have changed hands at 10s 9d to 11s; Marieli’s dark, realises 10s Gd ; second brands are held for 8s Gd to 8s 9d ; Hennessy’s case, 31s Gd to 32s ; good second brands, 27s Gd. A moderate business has been done in rum, whisky, and old Tom in bulk, at full rates ; Danville’s case whisky has been sold at 18s Gd, case old Tom is held for 15s. Sugars—We have only trade sales to report, stocks are getting low. Tea — A few small parcels have been placed at Is 5d to Is 8d for medium. Bottled ales and stout —We have little to report in these lines, importers find great difficulty in forcing sales, several small lots have been placed at 11s Gd to lls 9d. Tobacco meets with usual steady sale. Considerable business has been done in kerosene, at 2s 3d, DP. Price’s Belmont candles sell freely at lid. On Friday, 533 half-chests May tea were offered at public auction, but only a few halfchests changed hands, at prices not satisfactory to importers. 50 boxes Brandon’s stearine candles fetched 10id. A few quarter casks 12 op. rum realised 4s 18. Considerable parcels of port wine, sherry, currants, slates, Arrold’s stout, Tennant’s ale, and tobacco, were offered, but withdrawn for want of bids.
