(Per Anglo-Australian Press Telegraph Agency.) Auckland, July 28. The counsel on behalf of Harris and Macfarlane to-day announced in Court that an arrangement has been made which is likely to determine all disputes and prevent future litigation between the parties. The three actions by Harris against Macfarlane pending are withdrawn. The Waiteraata election returns from the country, with the exception of three, brought by carrier pigeons, show that Von der Heyde has received 153 votes and Macfarlane 167. Gratiamstown, July 28. A Dr Brown has been charged at the Resident Magistrates’ Court with being of unsound mind. The accused had left a letter at a tradesman’s to the effect that the writer was tired of his life. He also applied for a license to purchase a pistol, with the avowed purpose of shooting himself. He was remanded for medical examination. The accused was formerly surgeon of the Armed Constabulary. Wellington, July 28. The Cyphrenes has been detained. She is to remain at Port Chalmers one day. She will leave here on Friday, An inquiry has been held by the Customs into the circumstances connected with the accident to the Frowning Beauty in a gale on the 21st. The evidence showed that she signalled for assistance from four in the morning till noon, before assistance was sent. Nelson, July 28. Arrived—Lapaix, from London.

Dunedin, July 20, The “ Daily Times” publishes a letter from Mrs Howard to a friend in defence of her proceedings as immigration agent. She says she sent many excellent small parties by the Caroline and other vessels, and that she accompanied the Carnatic emigrants from Ireland to London docks. In conclusion, she says she may be unjustly deprived of her commission, but nothing can deprive her of the satisfaction experienced by her in helping the prospects of Otago by sending good labor, male and female, in every class of industry. She was sure that when the people of Otago became acquainted with the facts of the case they would do her justice. The letter has caused a good deal of comment. Auckland, July 29. A meeting of persons interested in the formation of a co-operative cattle-dealing and butchering society (limited) was well attended last night. A report was submitted, showing that notices of application for 917 shares had been received, and promises made to apply for many more as soon as the committee was formed. A provisional committee was elected. A meeting to report progress is to be held a fortnight hence. It was resolved that the Bank of the society be the New' Colonial Bank.
