Ingratitude. —lt is a strange thing, but nevertheless a fact, that the more hospitality is extended to certain individuals the more ingratitude is shown. The captain of a certain ship, peculiarly accessible at present, has entertained a great many people at no small expense, and His reward has been that the seats in the saloon, which are unusually handsome, have been “ whittled” to such an extent as to disfigure them. We all know the intense delight which it appears to g ! ye certain individuals of our nation to chip mementoes from any work of art, and thereby disfigure or utterly destroy it. P>ut in this case there is not even the incentive of ancient celebrity. That the unvarying kindness shown by the captain and officers of this ship should have met with such a base return is a disgrace to our port; and w" hope never again to be the chroniclers of a similar offence.
