ROAD BOARDS.
KOWAI DISTRICT.
A ppecial meeting of this Hoard was held at the Resident Magistrate's Court, Leithfield, on Friday, the 17th. Members present Messrs Samuel Coleman (chairman pro tern), W. McAdam, J. R. Pawsey, and Daniel Gorrie. A letter was read from the Secretary for Public Works, stating that a sum of £2Ol had been allotted out of the General Government Road Board Grant to he expended in improving that portion of the North road between Saltwater creek and the Kowai. liesolved that the surveyor report upon the road, and the Hoard would consider at the next meeting upon which portions of the road the money could be laid out to the greatest advantage. From the Secretary for Public Works, requesting the Board to state what number of immigrants they could find employment for. The Board decided that at present they could find employment for fifteen men, and instructed the surveyor to communicate with the Government to that effect.
From the Secretary for Public Works, stating that the Government could not entertain tiie proposal to take over the present Road Board office for immigration purposes. From the chairman of the committee of chairmen of Road Boards, requesting the Board to offer any suggestions as to any alterations that might seem desirable in the Roads Ordinance.
The surveyor was instructed to reply to the effect that the Board would give the matter deep consideration, and also every attention. The Board then adjourned.
SOUTH RAKAIA
The fortnightly meeting was held on July 16th. Present: the Chairman, Mackie, Coster. Resolutions were passed to the effect —That as the surveyor reported no road to be in existence between Rakaia bridge (for a certain extent) and Railway station, the chairman be instructed to request the Superintendent to proclaim a road. That no reasonable tender having been passed in for Jones's road cutting the clerk be instructed to employ emigrant labor and complete the same. Also to employ emigrants to make a cutting to the river, between Rokeby boundary and township. Also to reduce the gradient of road behind Mackie's garden by same means. Also to improve the Highbank chasm, and to make a cutting across the creek near Spaxtou. That tenders be again invited for the work on Mount Hutt; and that tenders be called for the following new works —The forming and metalling certain portions of Mackie and Rolleston streets, and the forming and metalling of a footpath from Railway terrace to school house. It wns also resolved that the chairman be instructed to ask for gravel pit reserves on either corner of reserve 1112, adjoining section 5821. The following correspondence was read: From the Secretary of Public Works, desiring to know how many emigrants the Board could employ. From Mr Middleton, drawing attention to the necpssity for forming portions of the Mackie and Rollestou streets.
From Mr Compton, calling attention on behalf of the residents to the necessity for forming a footpath to the school. From Secretary of Public Works, informing the Board that the sum of £738 had been allotted out of the General Government grant. The Board then adjourned to July 30th.
