SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
WEST CHRISTCHURCH.
The committee met on Wednesday evening, at 7 o'clock. Present, all the members, Mr Tancred in Use chair. The minutes of last meeting and a special meeting on the 11th instant, were read and approved.
A letter was read from the Chairman of the Timaru school committee, asking the co-operation of the committee in the following recommendations to the Provincial Government for its consideration in framing a new Education Ordinance:— " That in the matter of election of Committees, it is desirable that they shall be elected for three years, three members to retire by rotation aunually." The secretary was directed to acknowledge receipt of the letter, and to state that the committee concurred in the recommcudation, and would be prepared to support it at the proper time. Applications were read from Mr P. J. Vincent for an appointment as master, from Mr Hull as drawing master, and from Miss Edwards, Miss Innes aud Master Duncan as pupil teachers. Miss Edwards was appointed pupil teacher at Lincoln road school, subject to the approval of the Board.
Tenders for a turret clock for the Lincoln road school were opened,and Mr M. Sandsteiu's tender was accepted, for £(>o ; the other tenders being Messrs Coates and Co., £7O ; and Messrs. B. Petersen and Co., £IOO,
An application for the situation of schoolkeeper, from Mr A. B. Cave, was directed to be filed with other applications of a similar nature.
Letters wore received from Miss Stothard and the Rev J. Cumming, making suggestions as to the teaching arrangements for the new school, the consideration of which was deferred.
A circular from the Board was read with reference to the school registers, and the attention of the teachers was directed to be called to the matter.
The tender of Messrs England Brothers for outbuildings and fencing at the Lincoln road school, for £765, was accepted.
The sub-committee for the Lincoln road school were authorised to make (he necessary arrangements for the entertainment to be given on the occasion of the formal opening of the new school buildings on August 6th. After passing several accounts the committee adjourned.
KAIAPOI.
The ordinary meeting of the borough school committee was held on Friday evening. Present—Messrs Kerr, chairman {pro tern), Pashby, Johnston, Beswick, and Revs W. W. Willock and R. Bavin.
Leave of absence was granted to the chairman (Dr Dudley) who was suffering from illness. The masters' returns were read and considered.
Sundry accounts were passed for payment
Tenders for the fencing in front of the school buildings and for painting the roof of the schools, were opened, and the lowest accepted, subject to the approval of the Board of Education and the architect. The consideration of the letter from Messrs Proudhoe and Cooper, contractors, asking for an extension of ten weeks, in which to finish the buildings, was further deferred.
In reference to the letter from the Timaru borough school committee, it was resolved " That "the committee agrees with the proposal of the Timaru committee so far as applying to borough schools, viz : —"That the committee should be appointed for a term of three years, and that they would be prepared to co-operate in any action which the Timaru committee might take to secure this desired alteration in the Ordinance.
The Rev W. W. Willock and Mr Pashby were appointed a sub-committee to supervise the levelling of the school site and planting the same.
Al letter from Mrs John was read, asking if her children could attend the Kaiapoi school, being nearer than Flaxton, to which latter district the rates were paid.
It was decided that the chairman send an answer in the affirmative to the foregoing letter.
The Revs W. W. Willock, R. Bavin, Messrs Beswick and Kerr, were appointed a subcommittee to prepare an estimate of the school furniture required, to report thereon at next meeting. The chairman was requested to write to the Board of Education to ascertain what amount of salary they would give to a head master, and then to advertise in the Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland, Wellington, Nelson, and Otago papers, as well as in the " Press" and " Times ;" applications to be sent in before 30th September. After discussing some minor matters the committee then adjourned.
