Ashburton. —Our readers will remember that a little while ago a petition was forwarded from a number of the Ashburton ; residents to the Minister of Public Works, through the Provincial Secretary, praying that no embankment be made on the north side of the Ashburton river. The following - reply was yesterday received by Mr Lechner. terbury, N.Z.. 10th July, 1871; Sir,—l have the honor to enclose herewith copy of a letter from the Honorable the Colonial Secretary re memorial ‘railway embankment at Ashburton,’ and to request that you will be good enough to communicate the opinion expressed therein by the Engineer-in-Chief, to those persons who signed the petition. I have the honor to be, sir, your most obedient servant, C. H. Williams, Assistant-Secretary; for Secretary for Public Works. Mr Wm. Lechner, Ashburton.” “ Colonial Secretary’s Office, Wellington, 26th June, 1871. Sir,—l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 28th April, forwarding a petition from certain land owners in the Ashburton district, who point out the probability of an overflow of the Ashburton river being caused by the embankment raised in connection with the railway works now in progress, and to state that before returning a reply it was deemed desirable the Chief-Engineer should again make a personal inspection of the locality. This further inspection having been made by Mr Carruthers during his recent visit to the South, he has reported that he is decidedly of opinion that no danger need be apprehended from, the railway works now in course of construction. I should feel obliged if your Honor would communicate Mr Carruthers’ opinion to the memorialists. I have the honor to be, your most obedient servant, (signed) Daniel Pollen. To his Honor the Superintendent. Canterbury.”
