BOARD OP EDUCATION.
Monday, July 13. The usual weekly meeting of the Board was held yesterday at 3 p.m. Present — Messrs 0. C. Bowen (chairman), Knight, Kennaway, Maude, Tosswill, Gould, and Montgomery. The business transacted by the chairman since last meeting was approved. CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD. Mr Gould moved—“ That Mr Bowen be requested to accept the chairmanship of the Board.” He felt sure ho was speaking the sentiments of the whole of the Board when he said that no one could be selected who could fill the office so efficiently. Mr Knight seconded the motion with great pleasure. Mr Bowen had filled the office during the past year with great efficiency, and the experience he had gained during the past year would be of very great advantage to the Board. In view of probable changes likely to take place in March, it was not advisable to propose a new chairman. The motion was then put and agreed to. Mr Bowen said he had hoped that the office, for the reasons he had already stated, would have been filled by another member of the Board. However he would take the office for another year, as, though the work was hard, yet it became a pleasure to work with a Board in which so much unanimity was displayed. However, he hoped that the result of their year’s experience would be to enable them to make such alterations in the staff as would make matters work even yet more smoothly. REPORT OF SUB-INSPECTOR. The report of the sub-inspector on the various schools inspected by him was read. TIMARU. The inspector’s special report of the proposed increased staff in the Timaru Borough school was read. A letter was read from the local committee on the same subject. The committee forwarded a report from the head master on the matter. The secretary was instructed to reply that the Board deferred the consideration of the staff proposed till next meeting for the inspector’s remarks on the committee’s report. The Board agreed with the committee in the desire to make Timaru school efficient in the higher branches of education; but from report of inspector and examination papers forwarded to the committee, there appears to be a danger of introducing prematurely subjects for which the higher class is not sufficiently advanced. It was decided to leave the matter over until next meeting, Mr Restcll to furnish remarks upon the letters for the information of the Board. Master Jonathan Roberts was appointed as a pupil teacher, subject to examination, and Misses Kipper, Berger, and Wild also as pupil teachers. It was resolved that the committee be instructed to advertise for designs for the head master’s house, the amount having been passed by the Provincial Council at its last session. The sum of £IOOO was granted as a progress payment for the new school. LINCOLN. Respecting the vacancy in the Lincoln school, it was resolved that the temporary appointmentjof Mr Soundey be confirmed, on the understanding that as soon as a married master could be obtained the appointment should be given to him. GOVERNOR’S BAY. A letter was read from the local committee asking the Board to re-consider the decision arrived at respecting the appointment of a teacher. The Board dsclined to re-considcr its decision, TEACHER’S SUPERANNUATION. A letter was read from the hon. secretary of the Certificated Teachers’ Association, forwarding a scheme proposed for forming % superannuation fund for the teachers belonging to the association. It was resolved to defer the matter for consideration at a future meeting. LE RON’S BAY. A letter was read from the residents asking permission to erect a library in connection with the schoolroom. The Board granted the request, EYBETON. The Board resolved to allow the present master to continue in his position until January next, such examination to be final.
