The jury returned an open verdict. Mr Owen estimates his loss in excess of insurance at £OOO. Arrived—Barque Hokitika, from Puget Sound, with a cargo of 195,227 feet of lumber, 139,000 laths. The vessel comes for sale. The enquiry re the alleged murder at Pakivi is adjourned for a week. New Plymouth, July 11. The Waikato has arrived. She left London on March 24th. She is the first of the new line of immigrant ships, built for the New Zealand Shipping Company. She has 400 souls on board, all well TlllS DA YS TELEGRAMS. Wetlington, July 13. McDonald was sentenced this morning to three years’ penal servitude, the shortest term the Act allowed. Before beiug discharged the prisoner is to find sureties for keeping the peace in his part of the country, himself in £SOO, and two sureties £SO each. The Judge gave a long address, in the course of which he said he could not entertain the prisoner’s statement in extenuation. Having received Young with the utmost cordiality, and even tried to obtain a passage in the coach, and failing to'obtain that, to then deliberately shoot his horse under the pretence of doing something to satisfy the Natives, and so prevent something worse being done, could only bo characterised ns base and treacherous conduct. It was people such as he who so much retarded the progress and enlightenment of the Natives. The passengers by the Waikato arrived in excellent condition. They will be landed to-day, and will be placed in the immigration barracks. Poet Chalmers, July 13. Arrived—The ship Caroline, 89 days from Cork, with 300 i statute adults ; 12G single women ; 77 single men ; 40 of the women are out of Cork workhouse. At the heads is the ship Cartsburn from Glasgow with immigrants, the Hindostand with immigrants from London, and the Daunagh from London. Thcs.s. Easby, collier, arrived from Newcastle last night.
