The Globe. SATURDAY, JULY 11, 1874.

From an article which has lately appeared in the “ Daily Southern Cross,” it would appear that certain people are trying to get the seat of Government removed once more. Of all places in the colony, it is proposed (so it is said) to try Akaroa, and we are informed that Canterbury is prepared to pay £300,000 to meet the expenses of removal ! This, we cannot help tjiinking, will be news to most of the inhabitants of the province. The article we refer to goes on to say that Akaroa is out of the question. We should think it was indeed; the place is not going ahead at the same pace as any other town in the province, and is, moreover, so out of the way, that it would be impossible to make it fit for the permanent seat of Government without the most enormous expense. We really cannot see why we should not leave well alone. The present position of the seat of Government is as nearly central as it can well be, and it is in fact more convenient for the majority of Southern members that it should remain in Wellington, than that it should bo removed across the Straits to; this island, to Kelson, a notion which we see is mentioned in the article we quote from. The making of a comparatively unimportant town the seat of Government has been tried in the United' States arid in Canada, and it has merely led to the discomfort of the members of the legislature, and those people whose presence is necessary when the houses may be sitting, without giving any corresponding advantage to the country; in fact the only persons who can be said to be beuefitted, are the hotelkeepers of the town where the legislators are compelled to assemble. We hardly think that there is any jealousy between Canterbury and Otago now a-days, as to the whereabouts of the meeting of the two houses of parliament, and both provinces would bo quite content to let the legislature sit on at Wellington, without wanting the honor of their presence in Christchurch or Dunedin, The idea of constituting Wellington a federal city, and making Wanganui the seat of the Provincial Government of the province, seems to us almost as absurd as the idea of Akaroa being made the seat of General Government. Wanganui cannot be said to be a very easily accessible place, either by sea or land, and the removal would entail on the members for the eastern part of the province, a good deal of rougbish travelling that at present they manage to avoid. The article in the “ Daily Southern Cross” winds up with the statement, that neither with the North or South, is Wellington a political favorite Very likely not, but if it ever comes to the vote, it will be found that the northern members will vote against the Government being removed any further from them, and that the Southern members will vote for whatever spot will keep the seat of Government away from their nearest neighbors, therefore we venture to predict that Wellington will still enjoy the honors she has at present, for some years yet to come.
