SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
♦— EAST CHRISTOH UROH. A meeting of the East Christchurch School Committee was held on Tuos lay. July 7th, 1874, Present —Rev H. C. M. Watson and Messrs Pratt, Anderson, Macphersou, and Dymock. In the absence of Mr Wynn Williams, chairman, Mr Pratt was voted to the chair. The minutes of meetings held June 23rd and 30th were read and confirmed. Leave of absence was granted by request to tbc Kcv W. J. Habcns and Messrs Cuff and 'Jhomas. A letter was read from the chairman (Mr Wynn Williams) asking for leave of absence till Ist September, which was granted. It was resolved ttyat Mr Pratt be appointed deputy-chairman, to act in Mr Wynn Williams’ absence. Circulars No 3 and 4, dated Jane 6th, 1874, wore read. A letter was read from the Rev W. J. Habeas, stating that his attention had been drawn to the immediate want of additional teaching power at the Music Hall, owing to the absence of one of the staff, and that, as the chairman had been unable to attend to the matter, he had taken action, and engaged the services of a pupil teacher (Geo. Gilling) who had passed the recent examination; also giving his suggestions as to a permanent increase of the staff. It was resolved that Mr Habeas’ action be confirmed, and that he be requested to secure the services of such pupil teachers as may be necessary for the more efficient working of the Music Hall and Avonsido schools. On the question of instruction in drawing being given to the children attending the District Schools, it was resolved that the deputy-chairman be requested to seek an interview with the chairman of the Board of Education on the matter. A letter was read from Mr F. J. - Vincent, renewing his application for employment under the committee. Ordered to be recorded. A letter was read from Mrs Haughton, asking to be allowed to appoint a suitable person to clean St John’s school. Mrs Haughton was authorised so to do. Also asking to be permitted to occupy ouc of the cottages on the Gloucester street site. Granted temporarily. The secretary stated that Mr Hill (Avonside) had complained of several windows being broken in the school. The chairman was requested to enquire into the matter. The secretary submitted the following statement of the attendance at the District Schools for quarter ending June 30th, 187-I:—St. John’s (girls), Noon bonks, 353; average attendance, 252-4. Music Hall (hoys), No on books, 294; average attendance, 221-1, Avonside (mixed), No on books, 327; average attendance, 230-16. Total on books, 974; total average attendance, 703-66. Sundry accounts were passed for payment, and, the meeting adjourned.
