John Hawkins, convicted of specimen stealing at the last session of the Supreme Court, and whose case was submitted to the Court of Appeal for settlement of a certain point of law reserved, was brought up for judgment. The verdict having been fully affirmed by the higher Court, defendant was sentenced to eight years’ penal servitude. John Gndge, convicted of an unnatural offence, was sentenced to five years ; Henry Arnutt Digby, for larceny, to three years’ hard labor ; Henry Crady, for house breaking. to twelve months ; Edward Jones, for embezzlement, to two years ; Felix Seymour, formerly clerk to Fraser and Tinne, was sentenced to five years ; Charles Weathered, for malicious injury to property, to six months’ hard labor ; Heta, a Maori, for horse stealing, to two years’ penal servitude; William Johnstone, for a nameless offence, to five years. In the Supreme Court, the grand jury, after twelve hours’ deliberation, returned a true bill against Alexander Brown for incendiarism. Cleared Camille, for Lyttelton, with timber. Grahamstown, July 7. The Vulcan Gold Mining Co.’s battery, mine, and all appliances were sold under a distress warrant to-day for £l2O. The plant cost about £3OOO. Nelson, July 7. Mr Curtis announced at a meeting of the House to-day a notice of his intention to bring in a Bill to borrow £250,000 to be charged against the revenue of the province.
