ROAD BOARDS.

EYRETON. The ordinary meeting was held on July 6th. Present—Messrs Dixon (chairman), Bradley, Coup, Dailey, and Wilson. Letters were read from Garrick and Cowlishaw in reference to purchase of road to Coutts’ bridge. t <lr , * The chairman was requested to have the purchase completed. From Dr Dudley, coroner, forwarding rider of the jury at the inquest of T. O’Callaghan, who 'Wps killed on Coutts’ bridge approach. ' "From the resident’s on Kaiapoi Island ■oath of the. cutting referring to the foregoing, and stating that they did not consider the Board at all to blame for the death of Mr O’Callaghan. Also suggesting that the road might be made in a line with the bridge at the north side. The surveyor was instructed to report to the chairman the quantity of land which would he required to form the road. From Mr John Davis, asking the Board to widen the approaches of the Eyre bridge. The surveyor reported that the approaches had been lengthened as directed by the Board, h,ut Mr Davis had not done the work 'he agreed* to do at the south end of the bridge. The Board instructed the surveyor to have the work done forthwith. Mr Wilson reported that Mr Eckersley was having a drain cut along the Mill road above Stonyer’s Mill, and he thought it his duty to stop the works till the Board met. Resolved: “ That Mr Wilson see Mr Eckersley, and make such arrangements as he thought best.” . . - - , »• Mr Joseph Clark applied to have the road fronting sections 2380, 850 and 820, cleared of flax, &c., offering to do the work for 30s per acre, and form the road by ploughing it within three years, agreed to. Mr Bailey asked to have the road continued between sections .5707 and 4481, to join the road at B.W. corner of section 3628. The chairman said ho would ask the Government to have that road laid out. The,Board agreed to contribute £5 to the cost of making road across a gully in line of road fronting section 6323, if Mr Butters would undertake to have the work done. It was resolved: “That Mr Stanton be ordered to continue formation along Grigg’s rain reserve, to join Wyatt’s road, so that the .road might be thrown open forthwith. The road to be formed as wide as the land would allow,: according to Mr Dudding’s survey. Mr Stanton to be paid £95 5s on account as soon as the work was done, and the balance as soon as the deed was signed conveying the land to the Board, The surveyor was instructed to have handrails put tip on all the bridges as soon as possible ; also to have the mill race filled in crossing the Mill road, to have the gullies filled in 6n Heyward’s road, at a cost not exceeding £lO, and take out summonses for drainage rates not paid July 13th. Mr Kelcher’s name having been put on rate roll in error, was ordered to be erased. It was decided to pay Mr Byron, foreman of woika, 7s 6d per day. Tenders were considered for forming north side of Dixon’s road (Mr Dixcn agreeing to pay Is 6d per chain towards the expenses), for filling gullies on Heyward’s road, forming Two chain road, forming Jeff’s road, widening Mile road and Byre drain, new tenders to be invited for the latter work. Accounts, amounting to £348 15s 2d. were passed for payment. MANDEYILLB AND RANGIORA. The monthly meeting of this Board was held on Friday last. Present—All the members, Mr H. Blackett (chairman) presiding, Mr, Roebuck waited on the Board in reference to No 1 Drain road, which he reported to be in a bad state. It was decided that the surveyor and chairman should inspect and report upon it. The conveyance deeds of the office having been made, the clerk was directed to have them signed and registered. It was resolved that the request of Mr Grimwood to have the bridge over the ditch at the junction of Boys’ and the Drain road taken up and twelve-inch draining pipe put in its place be agreed to. The 'clerk was instructed to write to the immigration officer offering to employ men from the barracks, they to be at liberty to leave the Board’s employ when situations were offered. A discussion took place in regard to the rate of wages, but the matter was left with the surveyor to arrange. The tenders for forming School street being considered too high, it was resolved to pro ploy the labor gang on the work.

A letter from Mr Brundell and others was read, asking that the bridge over the River Cam might be put into repair. The surveyor was directed to see to the work. It was decided that Messrs Duncan and Bramiey report at next meeting on the purchase of a shingle pit in the Bwamp district. The Chairman, In reply to Mr Wilson, stated that Mr Porter had been appointed pouudkeeper at Woodend, which had been notified to the Government ; but he was not aware whether his appointment had been gazetted. It was decided to order a notice board for the Woodend pound. The surveyor was directed to have handrails placed on bridges where necessary, and report on the state of the Ravenswood millstream bridge. The Chairman pointed to the necessity for metalling the end of Main street, as the traffic was cutting up the formation, and it was decided that three chains be completed. The clerk was ordered to write to the Eyreton Board, asking them to join in the purchase of a number of maps of the district. A letter from the chairman of the Southbrook school committee was read asking that the road to the school should be formed. Agreed to. Ti e surveyor was instructed to hire one or two drays to cart metal on to the main roads as required. It .was decided that the meetings of the Board should he held fortnightly ; the next meeting to be held on Friday, July 17th. Accounts amounting to £375 12s 8d were passed for payment. The Board then adjourned. SOUTH RAKAIA. The meeting of this Board, was held on Friday, the 3rd of July, Present ; The chairman (Cathcart Wason). and Messrs Mackie, Holmes, Coster, and Alington. It was resolved that tenders be called for the following works .—l. A cutting to river on Jones’ road. 2. About 21 chains of cuttings, forming, metalling, and forcing on main Rakaia and West Coast roads. 3. For two bridges across creeks on main road to Blackford. 4. For the cutting to river at Corwar. (None of f hc previous tenders being accepted.) 5. For forming road from passenger station to Rakaia bridge. Tenders were accepted for the following works :—l. Fencing in Road Board office. 2. Forming and metalling railway terraces east and west. The clerk was instructed to examine the terrace between township and Rokeby boundary, and report as to best position for a cuttinar. Also, to report upon the necessity for work being done in the vicinity of Spaxton. Also, to report upon the Highbank chasm. The Board stands adjourned to Thursday, 16th instant.
