BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LYTTELTON. ' Monday, June 2!). The Council met at the usual hour. Present—Crs Hawkins, Graham, Buist, Grange, Allwright, Kenner, Young, his Worship the Mayor presiding. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The clerk’s report showed that the sum of £35 5s had been received during the week. Accounts amounting to £6 4s were passed for payment. The overdraft was stated to be £309. The following letters were read : To T. H. Potts, M.P.C., re Governor’s Bay road. To the Provincial Treasurer re balance of amount for repairs of the Governor’s Bay and Sumner roads. From Provincial Treasurer, in reply to the same, stating that the sum of £B9 18s 4d had been passed and vouchers made out for this amount. The following report of the Mayor, as chairman of the Borough Council appointed to inquire into how the books of the Council had been kept, was read by him : “ On behalf of the committee, I have the honor to report that the Council met as ordered, and after consideration of various circumstances adduced, resolved to recommend as follows :—That a new book be obtained to be kept by the clerk with a detailed account of receipts and expenditure, and that an expert be called in to examine the bo >ks, and post them up to date.” His Worship moved, Councillor Grange seconded, and it was resolved, that the report bo received.
Cr Kenner considered the matter should lie ri • 1 11 with by a committee ; and after some remarks as to how the work of the office has been carried out, he moved—- “ That his Worship the Mayor, Cr Hawkins, and the clerk prepare a proper book.” The motion was carried.
Cr Graham said he was surprised at readin*: the remarks in the proceedings of the Provincial Council made by one of its members, that Lyttelton was only twenty minutes distance by rail.vay from Christchurch. , Ha presumed the gentleman who had, made the statement must have travelled by express, aa such a time was never made by the ordinary trains ; —if an accident happened in Lyttelton persons had (unless the accident was timed to suit the train) to wait hours in Lyttelton in great agony. His Worship said he had received a complaint from Captain W; N. Chapman respecting his rates, for which he had been summoned. He (the Mayox-’s) opinion was that Captain Chapman had been wrongly assessed by Mr Brunsden. It was resolved that the amount of rate be refunded.
His Worship called the attention .of the Council to the amounts voted by the Provincial Council, and considered that the Council should address itself to the matter as to how the money should be expended. Cr Grange gave notice of motion that the clerk be employed his full time at a salary of £l5O per annum. The Council then adjourned.
