ROAD BOARDS.

heathcotb. This Board met on Thursday, June 25th. Prcseut—Messrs Attwood, Ness, Mardon, and Dunlop. Mr Ness acting as chairman pro tern. The minutes of the las meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved that the Heathcote and Spreydon drainage committee be requested to appoint a proper qualified engineer to report on the present state of the drain from Wilson’s bridge to the gas works. A petition was received from ratepayers from Cashel street east, and also one from residents in Worcester street east, complaining of the bad state of the footpaths, and asking for improvements. Board agreed the matter should be attended to as soon as it was possible, there being so many works requiring attention now the bad weather had set in, that it was impossible to attend to them all at once. Also, a petition from residents at the foot of the hills, requesting the Board to take steps for forming the road reserved round the foot of the hills passing the residence of Miss Skillicorn, to the end of the Colombo road south.

It was agreed to defer the matter till next meeting, and the chairman then to report on the same.

Mr Ga Id waited on the Board, claiming the amount of £9 15s as per account rendered, when the Board, after going into particulars, agreed to allow £4 15s, and to consider the matter settled. A letter from Mr J. C. Palairct, complaining of the road near his residence being in bad state of repair. , The Board considered there were other works requiring their attention far more than this, therefore they would have to do the same at (heir convenience. A letter from Mr A. 0. Cotterell enclosing an agreement between him and the Board for a gravel pit at Waltham, which the Board agreed to sign. The clerk was directed to write to Messrs Garrick and Cowlishaw, informing them the Board are surprised at not having yet received their opinion for the Board’s procedure re Jackson’s creek, and other matters, as the drainage question was getting serious, and the Board wanted to be doing in the matter. Also, write to Provincial Engineer for specifications for improvements to Sumner road, as the Board were anxious to get on with the work while the traffic is off the road. Also, to write to Mr J. C. Wilson, giving him notice to put in a culvert or fill up cutting across Hills road. Also, to Mr Deßourbell, requesting him to put culverts in to carry off the water from the new roads formed by him in rural section No 05. The Board agreed to accept Messrs Farland and Sons offer for supplying and carting 400 yards of broken metal on to the roads lying between Armitage’s and Farland’s and bridle path to Ferry, at 7s Gd per yard. The clerk was directed to give Mr Horler notice to remove all obstructions on the river road at the quay, as the Board were about erecting a bridge over the stream to connect the Ferry road with Opawa. * The clerk had received rates during the last fortnight to the amount of £23 5s 4d. Accounts to amount of £76 14s 2d were passed and ordered to be paid, when the Board adjourned. OXFORD. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Road Board of the above district was held at the office on June 20th. All the members were present, the chairman presiding. A lengthened discussion took place relative to the overflow of water from various creeks. It was decided to turn the water flowing along Church road round by Church corner into the adjoining creek, as a temporary arrangement for the relief of the fanners on the Carlton hat, pending a general survey of the district for the purpose of ascertaining the proper levels and watercourses. A letter was received from the Secretary for Public Works, ratifying the acceptance of Messrs Petrie and Bluett’s tender for the erection of six laborers’ cottages. An application was received for clearing a portion of D. Fisher’s and main bush roads, which was granted on the usual terras. Mr Pearson waited on the Board relative to the overflow of water on his land, and was informed that the matter would be attended to. The clerk was instructed to attend to a variety of works required in the district. A large amount of other business having been transacted, accounts to the value of £133 3s 9d were passed and paid, aud the Jtoaid adjourned,
