CITY COUNCIL AND CABMEN.
. Toxtke Editor of the Globe. Sib, —I was very glad to observe that you •took.nqtjce of the extraordinary proceedings of the City Council with'reference to the unsettled question as to the legality of the bylaw No 14, which ;the Council intend forcing down the throats of the cab proprietors and the public, whether they like it or not. i The fact of the City Ooun6il attempting to pass an Act through the General Assembly in order to legalise .their illegal Act appears so absurd upon the face of it, that it is not at all likely the Assembly will entertain it for one moment. Let ;the 'City Council make their by-law legal, as they are required to do by Act of Parliament; let the cabmen be allowed to reason with the Council before making the by-law as to the fares and j other matters, which they are at variance with the Council about; let the Council " give and take " the same as any other members of the community, and I, for one, vouch for it that after;tho'by-law is passed, with these altera tions, there will be no difficulty with the cabmen, and they will be as glad to comply with the law as the City Council are anxious to enforce it. To endeavor to take an Act thrpugh the General Assembly to'make up for a misfeasance, while a case is pending in the Supreme Court, is what, might be expected from a defeated litigant—but not from one who has been victorious in the "little go." Yours, &c, O. G. Christchurch, June 25th, 1874.
