NOTICES OF MOTION. Tuesday, June 23. The report of the Sheep Importation Committee to be brought up. Mr Gray— To ask the Secretary for Public Works -whether it is the intention of the Government to take any steps for the settlement of the difficulty which exists between the Eiccarton Eoad Board and Mr W. Boag as to the gravel reserves near to Fcndalltown road. Mr Knight, to move—“ That it is desirable the Eoad Boards should have power to regulate the width of tires of the wheels of carriages conveying, heavy goods on the roads of the province, in accordance with a Bill intituled The Canterbury Width of Tires Act, 1873, brought into the House of Eepresentatives last year. That the above resolution be forwarded to the Canterbury members of the General Assembly, with a request that they will take active steps in the matter.” Dr Eaynee, to move—" That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to place'on the supplementary estimates a sum not exceeding £SOOO for carrying out the construction of the Epworth bridge, Temuka.” Dr Turnbull, to move— “l. That in determining the rate of charges for goods and passengers on the Christchurch and Lyttelton line, the interest upon the cost of the tunnel should not be carried to account. 2. That in view of Christchurch being the only inland capital of a province in New Zealand, the Christchurch and Lyttelton line should, in a large degree, be considered simply as an extension of the wharfage accommodation of the port, s and the charges reduced accordingly. 3. That in determining the rate of charges for goods and passengers on the other lines, the province ought to be divided into three circles, with Christchurch as a centre. Within the first circle, of say thirty miles from Christchurch, the rate_ought ,to be such as will enable the line to compete successfully with other means of transit. Within the second circle, of say sixty miles, the rate of charge ought to be reduced one-third. And within the third circle a still further reduction ought to be made of say one-half the rate charged within the first circle.” Mr Maskell, to move—“ That passengers by the railways be allowed to purchase their 1 ickcts at any hour of the day on which they intend to travel, either at the railway stations or at certain specified places in the various towns ; such tickets to be available for any train on such day,” Mr Webb, to move—“ That a respectful address be presented to his Honor the Superintendent, requesting him to give effect to the prayer of the petition from the Borough Council and inhabitants of the town of Lyttelton, asking for hospital accommodation in that town.”

lion Mr Buckley, to move—“ That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to place upon the Supplementary Estimates, a sum not exceeding £IO,OOO, to be paid over to the various Koad Boards as required, to meet claims for compensation for the alteration and deviation of roads in their respective districts.” The Provincial Secretary, to move—- “ That this Council recommend his Honor the Superintendent to reserve 200,000 acres of Pastoral Lands for the purpose of Primary Education in the Province.”

Mr Maskell, to move—“ That, his Honor thd Superintendent be respectfully requested to place on the supplementary estimates a sufficient sum to erect a new bridge over the river Ashley at the narrow part of the river above where the present bridge stands.” Mr Dixon, to move—“ That in the opinion of this Council it is desirable that at the junction of the Kaiapoi and Eyreton railway with the Northern railway it is desirable that the branch railway be continued unto the Kaiapoi railway station, and that his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to transmit this resolution to the General Government.

Mr Potts, to move —“ That the Government be requested to lay on the table a copy of any minute or memoranda that may exist in the Waste Lands or Survey Offices referring to the sale of the island in the gorge of the Rakaia, such information to, be accompanied with a plan of the section in which this island was included at the time of sale, showing the district in which the purchase was made.

Mr Knight, to move—“ That it is desirable that the Road Boards should have power to regulate the width of tires of the wheels of carriages conveying heavy loads on the roads of the province, in the direction of the provisions of a Bill brought into the House of Representatives last session ; that is to say, the width of the tires of all carts, drays, and waggons to be as follows :—Drawn by three horses, not less than'three inches; drawn by four horses, not less than four inches ; drawn by five horses, not less than five inches ; drawn by sis horses or. more, not less than six inches. That the above resolution be forwarded to the Canterbury members of the General Assembly with a request that they will take active steps in the matter.”

Mr Isaac Wilson, to move—“ That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to place upon the supplementary estimates a sufficient sum of money to survey and obtain an estimate for constructing a line of railway as near straight as possible from the Christchurch railway station, to the Bapanui railway station.” ORDERS OF THE DAY. Turnbull, to move—“ That, in the opinion of this Council, it is desirable that all contracts for surveys be open to competition, and that tenders be called for the same.” Dr EAYNER, to move—“ That his Honor the Superintendent be respectfully requested to urge upon the General Government the necessity of at once commencing the construction of the Opihi bridge, so as to enable the Timaru and Young’s Creek railway to be extended, into the, town of Temuka at the earliest possible date!”
