SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
KAIAPOI. The fortnightly meeting of the Borough school committee was held on Friday evening. Present—Dr Dudley (chairman), Rev R. Bavin, Messrs Johnston, Young, Kerr, and Pash by. Leave of absence was granted lo Rev W. W. Willock and to Mr Beswick. The latter on account of illuo-s.
A letter was read from Mr R; Powrie, stating he .was not satisfied with the committee’s decision, but held that the master had acted illegally in turning the boy out of school. He had made an apology to Mr Matthews, but under protest, as ho was forced to send his sou to the Borough school because there was no other in Kaiapoi, and he was not in a position to send him elsewhere. He had also written to the Board of Education to the same effect. The master’s returns were handed in and read.
It was resolved that the school holidays of a fortnight commence on Monday, June 22nd.
Sundry repairs to No 2, and the question of cleaning No 1 schools, were referred to the chairman.
A letter from Messrs Prudhoc and Cooper, contractors for the school building, was read, asking for an extension of ten weeks for the completion of their contract. It was decided that the consideration of the letter be deferred till next meeting, the chairman to confer with the architect and obtain his report, also a copy of the contract to be laid before next meeting, also that the architect’s attention be drawn to the heavy expense the committee will be put to if any delay occurred. The meeting then adjourned.
