He was remanded, and bail accepted for £ 1 800, Sailed—Star of the South, for Napier and Southern Provinces, to inaugurate the new arrangement fur the Fiji service,
Wellington, June 18. A “ Gazette ” proclamation announces that telegraphic messages originating in the colonies of New South Wales, Tasmania, and Queensland, may be transmitted through the post for delivery in New Zealand without postage ; also, that letters addressed to any officer in charge of a Telegraph Station, and containing no writing other than necessary directions for transmission, will also be free. An endeavor is being made towards the establishment of a monster civil service club. The cut lines of the scheme are said to be as follows The capital to bo £IO,OOO, which is expected to be advanced by the General Government on debentures. The building is to contain over 70 rooms, besides other esseni tials. The holders of the debentures are to allow a deduction of five per cent, from their salaries. A co-operative store, for the use of the members of the civil service, is to be attached to it. There is some talk that a new Supreme Court and Telegraph Office is about to be erected on the reclaimed land. Messrs Rundle and Bassett, of Patea, have obtained the contract for erecting the railway bridge over the Wanganui river, for £14,831. The Collector of Customs is about to hold an official inquiry into the statement made by a sailor of the Chevcrt, and since corroborated by another of the crew. It appears, however, that the captain of the Chcvert did report the man’s loss to the French Consul. The officers of the barque say he rounded to immediately, but the man sunk like stone. Nelson, June 18. The Governor sailed in the Blanche at one. He intends, if possible, to call at Picton. The ball last night was a great success. Over 200 were present. Greymouth, June 18. In the District Court to-day judgment was given in the action the Council v Hughes and McCarthy, lessees of the Brunner Coal Mining Company, for the payment of £11(1 odd a promised contribution towards Mr Moriarty’s fee. Judge Harvey non-suited the plaintiff with costs, on account of the action being premature on the point that it was ■ultra vires. It likewise raised the Judge’s opinion that the Municipal Council had no right to enter into an engagement for his services in connection with the Harbor works. Port Chalmers, June 18. Arrived —Brig Rio Logo, from Liverpool, 100 days out. She made the voyage from Tristan D’Acunha to the West Cape by dead reckoning, the chronometers were found to be useless ; also barque Francis, from Boston via Melbourne, She loads here for Boston. THIS BA TS TELEGRAMS. Greymouth, June 19. The Greymouth Coal Mining Company have bottomed the main shaft, and proved the seam to be fourteen feet thick. The coal is of excellent quality. A seam of first-class fireclay underlies the coal. The thickness is not proved, Wellington, June 19. The Provincial Government are about to follow the example of the Otago Council, and erect cottages for immigrants on account of the scarcity of house accommodation. Auckland, June 9. The Kenilworth arrived Jfrom the South Sea Islands. She brings Samoa passengers, who report first intelligence of gold discovery at Samoa was conveyed to residents there by New Zealand papers two months ago, and they did not know that Consul Williams took specimens from the Islands. There is no truth whatever in the alleged discovery.
