Auckland. —The “ Now Zealand Herald” of the I:2th reports The wretched stare of the weather during the past week has militated somewhat against the activity of business. Since our last report, that for our summary issue, published last. Saturday, there has been nothing worthy of note transacted that we are aware of. The Hero, after a long absence, arrived in port upon Monday night, and has since discharged a very large cargo, items of which have assisted considerably in sorting up waning stocks. A trade sale of ales,. wines, and spirits was held today by Messrs E. and H. Isaacs, who report offering extensive lines, and that most of those submitted were quitted. Their report says:—“The prices ruled for spirits rather in advance of previous sales, but the advance obtained was not equal in extent to that reported in home or Australian markets, Marteli’s bulk brandy realised Ps lid to 10s ; good second brands 7s 9d to 8s; MartelTs case, 30s; Beehive, 23s to 23s 6d ; whiskey, in bond, 4s 3d to 6s lOd ; Dunville’s case, 18s to 18s 6d. Of the sherries and ports few lines sold, and the bidding was dull ; ginger wine brought 13s 6d to 14s. Tennant’s ale, d.p., brought 12s 9d to 12s lOd ; Blood’s, 10s 3d to 10s 6d,” A telegram to-day informs us that 70,000 shares in the new Colonial Bank, now in course of formation, have been placed in Otago alone already. There is every prospect of the bank being successfully launched. In grain and produce there has been a little activity and rates are about the same as at last quotations. Stocks are equal to present requirements, and shipments to arrive are fairly numerous. Present quotations are, oats, 5s Od ; bran, Southern, Is 8d ; mills, 2s ; potatoes, £5 10s ; butter, Is 2d to Is 4d; maize, 0s 6d. The Hero brought a timely shipment of the latter, easing prices a trifle.
